Compare construction companies on EV/EBIT only after aligning the valuation date, earnings period, and calculation conventions. Then inspect the debt and cash behind enterprise value and the definition, timing, mix, and risk behind each company’s backlog. A lower multiple or a larger backlog is not, by itself, proof of better value.
What EV/EBIT measures
Enterprise value (EV) represents the market value of common equity, debt, and preferred equity, less cash and investments under the chosen convention. EV/EBIT divides that enterprise-wide value by earnings before interest and taxes. It can help compare companies with different capital structures, but differences in the multiple still need to be understood through the companies’ fundamentals. CFA Institute’s 2026 curriculum explains enterprise-value multiples and peer comparisons.
For every company, disclose the share-price date, shares used, EBIT reporting period, whether EBIT is reported or adjusted, and the debt, cash, and other capital claims included in EV. Apply the same definitions across the peer set. There is no single debt convention established here as universally mandatory; consistency and transparent disclosure matter.
Build enterprise value consistently—and show the debt bridge
Market capitalization is not enterprise value. Debt and other specified capital claims raise EV, while cash and investments reduce it. Since EBIT is before interest expense, two contractors with similar operating earnings but different debt and cash can have different EV/EBIT ratios. Show the bridge from equity value to EV rather than relying on an unexplained vendor multiple. CFA Institute’s 2026 equity-valuation material provides the relevant enterprise-value framework.

Review leverage and liquidity alongside the multiple. EV/EBIT puts debt in the numerator, but a single ratio does not describe refinancing needs, cash availability, or the broader balance-sheet risk. A lower multiple can also reflect weaker margins, growth expectations, or execution exposure—not necessarily an overlooked bargain.
Make the peer comparison fair
Construction companies are not interchangeable simply because they build projects. Define peers by geography, project type, size, and business mix. Match valuation dates and EBIT periods, and check whether unusual, negative, or cyclical EBIT makes a simple multiple misleading. If a figure is adjusted, identify the adjustment basis instead of mixing it with reported EBIT.

- Choose the peer set. Match geography, project type, scale, and business mix as closely as possible.
- Set a common basis. Use one valuation date and a matched EBIT reporting period; source market capitalization, debt, cash, preferred equity, and minority claims consistently.
- Reconcile EBIT. State whether it is reported or adjusted and use the same basis for every company. Flag negative, unusually low, or cyclical EBIT where the ratio may be uninformative.
- Calculate and disclose EV/EBIT. Show the EV bridge and the assumptions used rather than presenting a bare multiple.
- Assess balance-sheet risk. Compare leverage and liquidity with the multiple, not as an afterthought.
- Examine backlog quality. Reconcile definitions and test award status, timing, mix, duration, cancellation exposure, and expected profitability.
- Explain the gap. Connect multiple differences to supported fundamentals; do not turn backlog growth into an earnings forecast without evidence about conversion and margins.
Test backlog instead of taking the headline at face value
Backlog is a company-reported measure of future work, not a standardized promise of revenue or profit. Compare its components before comparing its size.
- Definition and award status: Find out whether backlog includes signed contracts, binding commitments, low bids, options, task orders, or other awards. These categories do not carry the same certainty.
- Conversion timing: Check when work is expected to become revenue and what portion is expected within the next year.
- Contract and customer mix: Fixed-price exposure, public versus private customers, end markets, and customer concentration can change risk.
- Execution and cancellation exposure: Scope changes, delays, termination rights, input costs, and project performance can affect realized revenue and margins.
- Profitability: Backlog is commonly expressed as expected revenue, not guaranteed profit. Review expected project margins and cost-to-complete exposure where disclosed.
Why reported backlog figures may not be comparable
Company filings illustrate how definition, timing, and composition change what a backlog figure means. These disclosures are examples, not a current like-for-like ranking or industry benchmark.

These amounts use different dates and company-specific inclusion rules. A direct ranking would require aligning dates, award status, business mix, and expected conversion. For instance, a low-bid project in one company’s backlog may not have the same status as a signed contract in another’s.

This is a method, not a dated valuation ranking: without a defined peer set and common market date, a purported current table of EV/EBIT multiples would imply comparability that has not been established. For a live analysis, refresh market inputs and the latest filings, state their as-of dates, and apply one EV and EBIT convention throughout. Backlog figures should likewise be taken from dated company disclosures and interpreted using each company’s own definition.
