These were different kinds of milestones—not all brand-new inventions or changes with the same reach.
What changed in technology in 2004?
The year is best understood as a shift toward more interactive, connected digital life alongside improvements to familiar products. A social network connected students; blogs, wikis and photo- and video-sharing services gave users more ways to contribute online; and browser and music-player updates shaped everyday digital use. The Computer History Museum’s retrospective timeline also places World of Warcraft and Google’s public-market debut among the year’s notable developments.
The examples below distinguish launches from product updates and broader trends. A service’s later importance does not mean it already had the same scale in 2004.

Facebook began as a campus network
Mark Zuckerberg launched Thefacebook on February 4, 2004, initially to connect Harvard students, according to HISTORY’s 2004 archive. The service’s early university focus is important context: it was not yet the global social platform it later became.
Pew Research Center’s 2014 web-history timeline reports that 1,200 Harvard students signed up during Thefacebook’s first 24 hours. That is a retrospective figure reported by Pew, not a contemporaneous company count: Pew’s Web History Timeline.

Firefox 1.0 made a new browser choice visible
Mozilla released Firefox 1.0 on November 9, 2004, for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The release was a significant milestone for Mozilla and for a browser built with contributions from volunteers and developers. Mozilla’s contemporaneous announcement said the preview release before version 1.0 had been downloaded more than eight million times; that number refers to the preview, not to Firefox 1.0 downloads: Mozilla’s Firefox 1.0 release announcement.
Mozilla later reported that Firefox passed 100 million downloads in less than a year after its 2004 release. This is a retrospective download milestone, not a count of active users in 2004: Mozilla’s Firefox milestones.

The iPod refined portable music
On July 19, Apple announced its fourth-generation iPod. The company highlighted a Click Wheel that combined touch-sensitive scrolling with five push buttons, and Auto-Sync, which kept the player’s music library up to date when connected to a Mac or Windows computer by FireWire or USB. Those features made browsing and maintaining a digital music collection more convenient; the announcement is documented in Apple’s July 19, 2004 announcement.
The web became more participatory
Wikis and blogs made publishing and editing accessible to more people, while social networking and photo- and video-sharing services encouraged users to contribute and circulate content. The Computer History Museum describes these as part of a broader change in how people used the web, rather than a single product launch: its 2004 timeline.

Online gaming and Google’s market debut
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft launched in 2004, adding a major online game to a year increasingly associated with connected services and shared digital spaces. The Computer History Museum includes it among the year’s notable events. The timeline supports the year and broad significance, not a more detailed claim about launch-day reach.
Google’s public-market debut
The Computer History Museum also identifies Google’s 2004 IPO as a significant milestone. Its timeline supports the year and general importance, but not the exact date or offering terms, so those specifics are not included here.

What made 2004 significant?
These developments mattered in different ways: Firefox and the iPod updated established categories, Thefacebook connected a defined student community, participatory services expanded what users could do online, and World of Warcraft and Google’s public debut marked milestones in gaming and the technology business. Together, they capture a year in which digital life was becoming more social and interactive without implying that every change began then or immediately reached everyone.
