Kotlin coroutines let a computation suspend while it waits and later resume without holding a JVM thread throughout the wait. They are not threads, and adding suspend to a function does not start concurrent work. For Java developers, the practical model is: use a coroutine builder inside a scope to start work, choose launch or async according to whether you need a result, and use a dispatcher to select its execution context.
What a coroutine changes compared with a JVM thread
Kotlin’s official documentation describes a coroutine as “a suspendable computation that lets you write concurrent code in a clear, sequential style.” On the JVM, coroutines still execute on operating-system-managed threads. The difference is that a coroutine can suspend, release its current thread while waiting, and resume later—potentially on a different thread.
That makes suspension distinct from blocking. A blocking wait, such as sleeping or waiting on a future, keeps the thread occupied. A suspension point can free the thread to run other work. This is a scheduling and lifecycle model, not a promise that every workload will run faster: CPU-bound work still needs processor time, and a suspending function can itself call a blocking API.
The Kotlin documentation illustrates the potential resource difference with an example involving 50,000 tasks: roughly 500 MB for its coroutine example versus up to 100 GB for 50,000 JVM threads. Those are documentation estimates for that example, not a general benchmark or a guaranteed ratio across applications.

What suspend means—and what it does not
The suspend modifier marks a function that can suspend and call other suspending functions. By itself, it does not launch a task or make a function concurrent. Starting coroutine work requires a builder such as launch or async, called from a CoroutineScope; withContext runs a block in a different coroutine context.
Most coroutine builders and related APIs used in Kotlin/JVM projects are provided by the separate kotlinx.coroutines library, rather than the Kotlin standard library. The official basics page showed org.jetbrains.kotlinx:kotlinx-coroutines-core:1.11.0 in its Gradle Kotlin DSL, Groovy Gradle, and Maven examples when accessed on October 4, 2026. Check compatibility with your project’s Kotlin, JDK, and platform versions before changing a dependency.

One useful rule for Java developers: suspension only frees a thread when the code actually suspends instead of blocking. If a suspending function calls a legacy blocking API, that call can still occupy its thread. Adapt or dispatch blocking work appropriately rather than assuming the suspend keyword transforms it.
Keep concurrent work inside a scope
A CoroutineScope gives work a lifecycle owner. Structured concurrency connects child coroutines to the parent scope that created them: the parent waits for its children, and cancellation and failure are propagated through the job hierarchy. That makes completion and cancellation easier to reason about than detached background work with no clear owner.

Use a scope tied to the operation or component that owns the work. Avoid treating global or detached work as the default: when work escapes its owner’s lifecycle, the caller can lose a clear way to wait for it or cancel it.
Choose launch or async by the result you need
| Builder | Use it when | What it returns | How completion or value is handled |
|---|---|---|---|
launch |
The work has no value result for the caller. | A Job. |
Keep the job when you need to manage completion or cancellation. |
async |
The work produces a value that the caller will need. | A Deferred<T>. |
Call await() to obtain the result. |
Both builders start coroutines, but they are not interchangeable: select based on whether the operation returns a value, not merely because both can run work.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Example: load two values within one operation
suspend fun loadPage(): ProfilePage = coroutineScope {
val profile = async { loadProfile() }
val settings = async { loadSettings() }
ProfilePage(profile.await(), settings.await())
}
Here, both child tasks belong to the coroutineScope; the scope does not finish until its children finish. Each await() obtains a result. This pattern does not make a blocking implementation of loadProfile() or loadSettings() nonblocking by itself.
How dispatchers relate coroutines to threads
A dispatcher is part of the coroutine context that determines where a coroutine executes. A coroutine generally inherits its parent scope’s context unless code specifies another one. Dispatchers choose execution context; they do not turn blocking code into nonblocking code.

Dispatchers.Defaultuses a shared background pool and is suitable for CPU-intensive work.- A Main dispatcher is appropriate for UI work when the platform integration provides one. On JVM, availability depends on the runtime and its integration—for example, Android, JavaFX, or Swing support.
Dispatchers.Unconfinedhas specialized behavior; Kotlin’s guide says it should not be used in general code.
For a CPU-heavy calculation, a suspending function can use withContext(Dispatchers.Default) to run the block in the shared background context. For a blocking call, choose an appropriate strategy for that blocking work; merely entering a coroutine or using suspend does not release a thread that is blocked inside the call.
Bridging Java executors and Kotlin coroutines
Coroutines do not eliminate Java’s executor model. Kotlin’s coroutine API provides Executor.asCoroutineDispatcher() to adapt a java.util.concurrent.Executor for coroutine dispatch. This is an interoperability bridge when an existing executor is part of your application, not a requirement to replace every executor with a coroutine-specific mechanism.
Kotlin is designed to interoperate with Java, and Kotlin code can call existing Java code. However, that general interoperability does not establish that invoking Kotlin suspend functions from Java has the same ergonomics as calling them from Kotlin. Treat Java-facing coroutine APIs as a separate design concern rather than assuming the Kotlin call syntax carries over unchanged.
Where to start in a Java-to-Kotlin migration
- Identify the lifecycle owner. Decide which operation or component should wait for and cancel the work, then use its scope.
- Mark suspension deliberately. Use
suspendfor functions that need to call suspending operations; do not use it as a synonym for “run concurrently.” - Pick the result shape. Use
launchfor work managed by aJobwith no returned value, orasyncwhen aDeferredvalue will be awaited. - Check what the work actually does. Distinguish suspending waits from blocking calls, and choose a suitable context for CPU-heavy or blocking operations.
- Verify platform support. Confirm that the dispatcher you need—especially Main—is available for your JVM runtime and UI framework.
The Kotlin documentation’s Coroutines basics and Coroutines guide explain the core model; the Coroutine context and dispatchers guide covers execution contexts. For lifecycle and builder examples, see Coroutines and channels − tutorial. Kotlin’s ExecutorCoroutineDispatcher API documents executor integration, and the Main API reference describes Main dispatcher support.
