Frame generation inserts estimated images between frames a game actually renders, making motion look smoother without creating an equivalent increase in real game updates or input sampling. On Android, Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion (ANF) is a newly documented example: its first release generates one frame between each pair of rendered frames and adds latency equivalent to one rendered frame. Whether it helps depends on the specific chipset, game integration, frame pacing, image quality, and sustained power and thermal behavior.
What frame generation does
A game normally renders a sequence of frames from its current simulation state. Frame generation estimates an additional image between two rendered frames and inserts it into the displayed sequence. The result can look smoother, but the inserted image is not a new game simulation step: it does not mean the game advanced its world or sampled your controls at the same rate as the displayed frames.
Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion SDK documentation describes a pipeline that uses post-processed color from two consecutive frames, along with depth and motion vectors from the later frame, to estimate an intermediate image. Areas newly revealed as objects move—known as disocclusions—may not exist in the earlier image data, so the system has to infer what belongs there. User-interface elements are composited afterward.
What it can change in gaming performance
Smoother-looking motion, not twice the real game rate
Intermediate frames can make motion appear smoother when the original rendered frames are consistently paced. Qualcomm says ANF’s initial implementation inserts one generated frame per real frame. In a title using both ANF temporal super resolution and frame generation, the intended pipeline can render at half resolution and half the real-frame rate while delivering full-resolution output at twice the submitted frame rate. That is a description of the design, not a guarantee for every game or phone.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Keep the measures separate: real rendered FPS describes how often the game produces a new frame from its simulation; displayed FPS can include generated images. A higher displayed number does not, by itself, show that the game is processing more input or updating its simulation more often.
Responsiveness and input latency
Qualcomm’s SDK documentation says its first frame-generation release costs roughly one additional rendered frame’s worth of input latency. That trade-off matters most when timing and immediate control are important, such as competitive play or precision actions. Smooth-looking motion and responsive controls are related but distinct outcomes; a displayed frame-rate increase alone cannot establish how a particular game feels.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Artifacts, pacing, and image stability
Because the intermediate image is estimated, fast movement, changing effects, disocclusions, and transitions around interface elements are useful areas to inspect. Qualcomm describes reduced artifacts and improved stability as goals of ANF; those are vendor claims, not independent comparative test results. Frame pacing also matters: unevenly spaced real frames can undermine the impression of smoothness even when extra images are inserted. Android Developers’ Game Mode guidance likewise emphasizes the importance of well-paced games.
Processing load, heat, and battery
Generating an image is not the same workload as rendering an entirely new scene, but it still uses processing resources. Qualcomm presents ANF as an efficient approach and describes dedicated hardware and on-chip memory; its claims do not establish a guaranteed battery-life or temperature outcome on a retail phone. Android Developers notes that raising resolution can increase thermals and raising frame rate can drain battery. Sustained results depend on the device, game, environment, and implementation.

Which Android devices and games support it?
Qualcomm’s September 2026 developer documentation says ANF support begins with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and higher platforms, with broader support planned. Qualcomm makes the SDK, samples, and documentation available to developers. The reviewed material does not list consumer phone models or a complete set of supported games, so platform capability alone does not establish that a particular handset or game exposes the feature.
Do not infer compatibility just from an Android version, a high-refresh-rate display, or the Snapdragon name. Practical support depends on the exact chipset, the phone’s implementation, whether the game has integrated the technology, and whether its settings make the option available. Check the handset and game documentation for those specifics.

Frame generation is not upscaling
Upscaling reconstructs or enlarges a game image rendered at a lower resolution to fit a higher-resolution output. Frame generation estimates an extra image between rendered frames. They address different things: image resolution versus displayed-frame cadence.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (SGSR) and SGSR2 are upscaling techniques, not frame-generation systems. SGSR2 uses color samples from previously rendered frames to improve reconstruction; it does not itself insert an intermediate game frame. Qualcomm reported that its two-pass fragment-shader SGSR2 variant took 0.905 ms to scale 630×1400 to 1260×2800 (2.0x) under the article’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 test conditions. That is an upscaling timing under those specific conditions, not frame-generation overhead or a cross-device guarantee. See Qualcomm’s SGSR2 article.

Android Game Mode can affect performance without generating frames
Android Game Mode includes interventions that can affect GPU load, power, and pacing; these are separate from frame generation. Android Developers says FPS throttling is available on Android 13 or later and can help stabilize frame rate and reduce battery consumption. Its backbuffer-resize guidance says GPU load and power may fall in applicable conditions, with outcomes depending on device and environment. These tools do not insert generated frames. Details are in the Android Developers Game Mode documentation.
How to judge an implementation
When comparing two phones, games, or implementations, use the same game and comparable settings, then separate the underlying rendered rate from the displayed rate. A useful comparison checks:
- The exact chipset and whether that platform is supported.
- Whether the game has integrated frame generation and exposes a setting for it.
- Real rendered FPS versus displayed FPS, and how consistently frames are paced.
- Added input latency alongside visual smoothness.
- Image stability during fast motion, around newly revealed surfaces, and near interface elements.
- Power draw and temperature over a sustained session, not just a brief run.
- Whether the display’s refresh-rate limit constrains the output.
The available sources do not establish controlled, independent Android phone comparisons for ANF’s sustained FPS, latency, image quality, or battery use. Avoid treating vendor efficiency claims or a generated-FPS figure as a substitute for those measurements.
