Chrome and Edge expose browser-managed AI APIs for tasks such as summarizing, drafting, rewriting, proofreading, translation, and flexible prompts. Availability is not uniform: support depends on the API, browser channel, device, and model readiness. Before building around an interface, detect it at runtime, check its availability, and plan a useful fallback.

Which browser AI APIs can you use?

Chrome documents separate interfaces for distinct tasks rather than one universal AI endpoint. The API overview lists Prompt, Summarizer, Writer, Rewriter, Proofreader, Translator, and Language Detector. Chrome describes Summarizer, Writer, Rewriter, and Proofreader as text-to-text; Prompt also supports multimodal capabilities. Translator and Language Detector use expert models, while the other listed APIs use a language model intended to run locally on desktop and laptop computers. See Chrome’s built-in AI overview for current per-API documentation.

API Best suited to Typical use
Prompt Flexible instructions, including multimodal tasks Answer questions about page content, classify or filter content, or extract event and contact details
Summarizer Condensing longer text Create key points, a teaser, or a headline from an article or conversation
Writer Creating text for a defined task Draft copy from instructions
Rewriter Revising existing text Adjust length or tone
Proofreader Language corrections Address spelling, grammar, and punctuation
Translator Translation workflows Translate text between supported languages
Language Detector Identifying text language Determine the language before routing text through a workflow

These are task-oriented interfaces, not interchangeable names for the same implementation. Check the documentation for the particular API and browser you intend to support.

How do you check Chrome support and model readiness?

Feature detection alone is not enough: an API may exist while its model is unavailable or still needs downloading. Chrome’s getting-started guide recommends checking the relevant API and its asynchronous availability() method, then handling the result before creating a session.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check that the API exists. Test for the relevant global or object before calling it. Do not assume that every Chrome installation or release channel exposes every API.
  2. Ask whether it is usable. Call availability() with the options your feature will actually use. For Prompt, supported modality and language can affect the result, so Chrome cautions against checking with options different from those used for prompting.
  3. Handle the returned state. Availability can indicate that a feature is unavailable, downloadable, downloading, or available. If a download is required, show progress and explain why the model is needed instead of leaving the user with an unexplained pause.
  4. Create a session when ready. Chrome’s instructions say user activation may be required before calling create(). Design the interaction so the user can initiate the action when needed.
  5. Keep a fallback path. Offer a non-AI workflow or another supported implementation when the API, device, language, or model is unavailable.

Chrome’s Prompt examples include answering questions based on page content, classifying news for personalized feeds, filtering content, and extracting event details for calendar entries or contact information. Those use cases still require your application to decide what content to provide and how to present generated results; an API does not replace product-level validation or user experience design. The Prompt API documentation describes its options and availability checks.

What does Chrome require on the device?

Chrome’s current getting-started guide sets the following requirements for Prompt, Summarizer, Writer, Rewriter, and Proofreader. They are documented thresholds, not a guarantee that every qualifying device will have the API enabled.

  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Operating system: Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or later, Linux, or ChromeOS on Chromebook Plus devices.
  • Storage: At least 22 GB free on the volume containing the Chrome profile.
  • Compute: Strictly more than 4 GB of GPU VRAM, or a CPU system with at least 16 GB of RAM and at least four cores.
  • Initial download: An unmetered network connection is required for the initial model download.

Chrome says the first interaction with these APIs requires a model download; after that, use does not require a network connection. The same guide says that model use sends no data to Google or a third party. That is a claim about the built-in model’s use, not a guarantee about an integrating website or extension: application code may transmit data through its own services.

Translator and Language Detector have a different device caveat in Chrome’s guide: they work on desktop Chrome and not on mobile. Check their language support and API-specific availability rather than assuming the system requirements above apply identically to every API.

What is documented for Microsoft Edge?

Microsoft’s reviewed Writing Assistance APIs documentation describes a developer-preview setup using Edge Canary or Dev. It directs developers to enable the relevant edge://flags/ setting, check device performance class at edge://on-device-internals, test whether an API exists, call availability(), and create a session once the model is available. The initial model download is required, and Microsoft notes that hardware-specific issues can occur.

This preview workflow should not be treated as proof of support in Edge stable. Edge’s version 147 release notes call the Prompt API experimental and list an origin-trial expiry of June 16, 2026. Because that date has passed, those notes do not establish whether Prompt remains available in a later Edge channel or under a successor trial. Verify current Microsoft documentation and the target Edge channel before committing to it. Do not apply Chrome’s numeric device thresholds to Edge; Microsoft’s reviewed guidance instead points developers to Edge’s device-performance check.

How should you choose an implementation?

Start with the user task, then validate the runtime conditions that determine whether the browser can perform it. A practical compatibility review should cover:

  • Task and modality: Select an API documented for the job; Prompt’s multimodal capabilities are distinct from the listed text-to-text APIs.
  • Browser and channel: Record the exact API and channel you have verified. Do not infer stable support from a preview or trial.
  • Device and language: Check the API’s own device and language constraints, not just whether its name appears in documentation.
  • Readiness: Handle downloading and unavailable states, and give users a clear indication of what is happening.
  • Connectivity: Account for the network needed to obtain a model initially, even where later model use can be offline.
  • Data boundary: Distinguish local model processing from any data handling in your site or extension.
  • Fallback and output handling: Preserve a usable alternative and decide how generated text will be reviewed or incorporated into your product.

API status and device requirements change over time. Chrome’s status overview, updated September 12, 2025, listed Translator, Language Detector, and Summarizer as available from Chrome 138 stable and Writer and Rewriter as developer trials; Chrome’s Prompt page was updated August 26, 2026. Treat that older overview as a dated status snapshot, not a substitute for checking current API documentation and actual runtime availability.
