Microsoft To Do tasks are managed through Microsoft Graph. Start by retrieving a task list, then use that list’s ID to read or create tasks. For production integrations, use documented v1.0 operations, request only the permission required for each operation, and use delta query if your app needs to keep a local copy in sync.
How the Microsoft To Do API is organized
Microsoft Graph represents a To Do list as a todoTaskList and each task as a todoTask. A task belongs to a list; Microsoft currently documents task creation only inside a task list. The API is intended to manage tasks across To Do clients and connect tasks with other workflows. See Microsoft’s v1.0 To Do overview and todoTask resource reference.
The main workflow is to get the signed-in user’s lists, choose a list, and then work with tasks in that list:
GET /me/todo/listsretrieves task lists.GET /me/todo/lists/{todoTaskListId}/tasksretrieves tasks in the selected list.- Use the list-scoped task endpoint to create, update, or delete a task. The overview identifies these operations as POST, PATCH, and DELETE; check the operation reference for the exact URL and request body for your API version.
Microsoft’s To Do API overview summarizes the common operations and property mapping.

How do I create a Microsoft To Do task with Microsoft Graph?
- Request delegated
Tasks.ReadWritepermission and obtain the signed-in user’s authorization. - Call
GET /me/todo/listsand select the list where the task should go. - Send a
POSTrequest to/me/todo/lists/{todoTaskListId}/tasks, with a request body that matches the v1.0 task schema. - Use the returned task resource in your app, and use the documented PATCH or DELETE operation if the user later edits or removes it.
The v1.0 create task reference documents the endpoint and permission requirements. Creating a task for the signed-in user is a delegated operation: application permission is not supported for this operation in the v1.0 reference.
What permission does the To Do API need?
Permissions differ by operation. Do not assume that a permission or authentication model documented for reading tasks also applies to creating them.

What can a task contain?
The todoTask resource includes fields such as title, body, categories, due date and time, completion date and time, importance, reminder settings, recurrence, status, and timestamps. It also has relationships to checklist items, linked resources, attachments, and extensions. The exact supported properties and request body depend on the operation and API version; consult the v1.0 resource reference before implementing a field.

Checklist items and linked resources
Checklist items represent smaller subtasks within a task. A linked resource can connect a To Do task to a related item in a partner app, which is useful when a task originates in another workflow and users need a way back to it. These resources extend the task’s context; they do not change the basic rule that the task belongs to a task list.
Can I sync Microsoft To Do tasks with my app?
Yes. The v1.0 overview documents delta query for both task collections within a list and task lists. Delta query lets a client request changes incrementally rather than repeatedly treating every synchronization as a full refresh. That can support a local cache, but your app still needs to process the results and maintain its synchronization state according to Microsoft Graph’s delta-query guidance.

Use v1.0 for production integrations when it supports the feature you need. Microsoft Learn warns: “APIs under the /beta version in Microsoft Graph are subject to change. Use of these APIs in production applications is not supported.” If a needed feature appears only in beta, verify its version-specific documentation and treat it as unsuitable for a production dependency until Microsoft documents production support. - Confirm the operation and API version before building against an endpoint.

- Request the least-privileged permission documented for each operation.

- Use delta query when maintaining a local cache and incremental synchronization is appropriate.
- Check the resource and operation references for exact property support and request bodies.
