Yes—available surveys and GitHub data show momentum for Rust in some developer communities and workplaces. But they do not prove that Rust’s share of all developers is rising worldwide. The clearest signals are strong continued-use interest, higher workplace use among Rust survey respondents, and a Rust Project report of increased hiring interest.

What the numbers say—and what they measure

Several indicators point in the same direction, but they measure different populations and behaviors. They should not be combined into a single Rust adoption rate.

Signal Finding What it means
Continued-use interest Rust received a 72% admired score in Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, whose language section had 31,771 responses. Stack Overflow, 2025 Among respondents who had used Rust in the previous year, this measures the share who wanted to keep using it. It is not the share of developers who use Rust.
Organisational use 45% of Rust Project survey respondents said their organisation made non-trivial use of Rust in the 2025 report covering 2024 responses—seven percentage points higher than in the 2023 survey. Rust Survey Team, 2025 A rise within a self-selected Rust community survey, not a census of companies.
Use at work 38% of respondents in that Rust Project survey used Rust for most of their personal coding at work, up from 34% the previous year. Rust Survey Team, 2025 A measure of respondents’ work, not all developers’ work.
Frequent use 53% of respondents said they used Rust daily or nearly daily. Rust Survey Team, 2025 Frequency among surveyed Rust users, not adoption across the profession.
GitHub activity Rust appeared among the ten fastest-growing programming languages on GitHub in the 2024 Octoverse. GitHub, 2024 Evidence of activity on GitHub, not a global count of developers or production deployments.

Is Rust becoming more popular?

The evidence supports a careful yes: Rust has strong continuing-use sentiment, and Rust Project survey respondents reported more workplace use than in the prior survey. GitHub’s 2024 ranking is another sign of ecosystem activity. These indicators make Rust’s momentum credible, but none establishes its overall share among developers.

Stack Overflow’s admired score is particularly easy to misread. It represents people who already used Rust and wanted to continue, not all survey respondents choosing Rust, and certainly not 72% of developers using it. The Rust Project’s workplace figures answer a different question, among a different respondent group.

Are companies adopting Rust?

Among respondents to the Rust Project’s 2025 survey, covering 2024, the share reporting non-trivial organisational use rose to 45%, seven percentage points above the 2023 survey. The share who used Rust for most of their personal coding at work rose from 34% to 38%. These are encouraging workplace signals, but the survey does not represent all organisations.

In the same survey, employers most often said they invested in Rust to build relatively correct, bug-free software, followed by performance. Respondents reported using Rust particularly in server backends, web and networking services, and cloud technologies, with a slight uptick in embedded use. Those observations describe the survey participants’ experience, not every company’s priorities or technology stack. Rust Project survey results

Is Rust in demand for jobs?

There is a positive hiring signal, but not a verified count of job openings or completed hires. The authors of the 2025 State of Rust survey said its results “Confirmed the hiring trend from organisations looking for more Rust developers.” The report does not quantify that trend as audited vacancies, hires, or active job listings, and its authors caution against broad extrapolation. 2025 State of Rust survey results

That makes it reasonable to say some organisations are looking for Rust developers. It does not establish how many roles are available, how quickly they are being filled, or how Rust compares with other languages across the entire job market.

Why Rust’s momentum has limits

Rust’s benefits come with costs that can affect adoption. In the Rust Project’s 2025 survey, respondents continued to identify compile times and storage use as productivity concerns, alongside language complexity. These issues can matter to teams weighing Rust against languages their developers already know or tools that fit an existing build process. 2025 State of Rust survey results

Learning is part of the adoption decision, too. The Rust Project’s 2024 survey found official documentation and The Rust Programming Language book were common learning materials. A team may see value in Rust and still need time for developers to build fluency and for its tooling to fit their workflow. Rust Project survey results

How much confidence should you put in the trend?

  • Community surveys are self-selected. The 2025 State of Rust survey collected 7,156 responses, slightly fewer than the previous year. Its authors warn that the results should not be over-extrapolated to the broader developer population. Rust Survey Team, 2025
  • Platform growth is not profession-wide growth. GitHub activity captures developers and repositories on that platform, not all workplaces, codebases, or developers. GitHub Octoverse, 2025
  • Interest, use, and hiring are separate signals. Wanting to continue using Rust, using it at work, an organisation adopting it, and an employer seeking hires are related but not interchangeable measures.
  • There is no established global headcount. These sources do not provide a current official count of Rust developers worldwide.

What this means if you are considering Rust

Rust is worth evaluating if your work would benefit from its reported strengths in correctness and performance, or if you are targeting organisations that use it. The evidence here supports genuine interest and reported workplace momentum—not a guarantee that Rust is required for most developer jobs or that every team will benefit from adopting it.

For a practical starting point, the official The Rust Programming Language book is freely available online. Use it to judge the learning curve against your own project before treating industry interest as a reason to switch languages.
