Python.org publishes SBOMs for CPython release source archives; individual Python package archives may carry their own SBOMs; and teams can generate an SBOM for an installed environment or application build. To get a useful record, match it to the exact artifact you ship or install, then check its format, component coverage, and dependency detail.
What is an SBOM?
A software bill of materials (SBOM) is an inventory of the software components in a product and how they relate. Depending on how it is produced, it can record component names and versions, identifiers, source references, checksums, licenses, and dependency relationships. Teams use that information to understand what is inside software and correlate components with vulnerability information. Python.org describes an SBOM as being like a list of ingredients for software in its CPython SBOM information.
An SBOM is useful only to the extent that it describes the software you actually use. A record for CPython itself is not automatically an inventory of every third-party package in an application built with Python.
Does Python publish an SBOM?
Yes. Python.org provides SBOMs for CPython release artifacts. The published documents use SPDX 2 in JSON encoding, and Python.org says SBOMs are currently available for source releases. These describe CPython artifacts; they do not establish that every package on PyPI publishes an SBOM.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
To inspect one, open the Python.org SBOM page, locate the relevant CPython release and source artifact, and use the associated SBOM. If your consumer requires another supported format, Python.org notes that conversion tools can transform the SPDX document into formats such as CycloneDX.
Can Python packages include an SBOM?
Yes. PEP 770 defines a mechanism for including an SBOM document in a Python package archive. It recommends broadly accepted formats such as SPDX or CycloneDX but does not require one format. The PSF’s documented package-archive workflow describes projects referencing SBOM files in metadata, build backends including them in archives, PyPI checking for presence and validity, and installers storing them under .dist-info/sboms. Generators may then inspect those files when producing a wider environment or package SBOM.

This is a documented mechanism and implementation direction, not evidence that every package or index already includes and handles SBOMs uniformly. When a package archive contains an SBOM, use the one attached to the specific archive you downloaded or installed. PEP 770 notes that archives for the same release can differ because their contents and dependencies may vary by Python version, platform, architecture, and packaging choices.
How do I generate an SBOM for a Python project?
First decide what you need the SBOM to represent: an installed environment, a dependency declaration, a package archive, or a complete application build. A manifest or lockfile describes declared dependencies; an installed-environment scan can reflect what is present in that environment. Neither should be assumed to capture every bundled library or build input unless the tool analyzes those artifacts.

Generate from an installed environment or supported dependency input
CycloneDX Python’s usage documentation describes generation from installed environments, pip requirements files, Pipenv, and Poetry. Its example creates CycloneDX 1.6 XML from an environment. The environment command analyzes installed packages and may include metadata, licenses, and a dependency graph.
- Choose the input that matches your question. Use the installed environment if you want an inventory of packages present there; use a requirements file, Pipenv, or Poetry input when you need a record derived from that supported dependency source.
- Follow the tool’s documented command for that input. The project documents distinct usage for environments and dependency managers; do not assume every lockfile is accepted directly. Its overview does not explicitly support PDM or uv lockfiles, although it can analyze environments created with them.
- Select a format and specification version your consumer accepts. The reviewed documentation lists versions through CycloneDX 1.7, but tool releases can change, so check the current usage documentation before choosing.
- Review the output against the artifact. Check whether the components, versions, identifiers, licenses, and dependency relationships needed by your inventory or scanner are present. Keep the generated document with the build or environment it describes.
Consider an SPDX and CycloneDX generator for an installed module
The SPDX Foundation’s open-source tools catalog describes SBOM4Python as a free, open-source generator for an installed Python module. The catalog says it can output SPDX and CycloneDX and is intended to identify explicit and implicit dependencies. That description is not an independent benchmark or evidence that it is superior for every workflow; check its current capabilities and output against your chosen consumer.

Include archive and build contents where needed
If your deliverable is a wheel, source distribution, container, or application bundle, an environment-only SBOM may not describe everything shipped in that artifact. Prefer an SBOM tied to the actual archive or build, and verify that bundled native libraries and other non-Python components are represented when they matter to your use case. PEP 770’s archive mechanism addresses package-level SBOM inclusion; project build pipelines may need additional tooling for the complete deployed application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I use SPDX or CycloneDX?
PEP 770 notes that there is no universally accepted SBOM standard and discusses SPDX and CycloneDX as principal formats in the Python ecosystem. It deliberately does not mandate one. Choose based on the systems that will read the document and the information your workflow needs, rather than treating either format as a universal winner.

How do you keep a Python SBOM trustworthy?
An SBOM should remain attached to the exact release artifact or build it describes. Dependency changes can alter versions, identifiers, sources, checksums, licenses, and relationships, so update and regenerate the record as the software changes.
The CPython Developer’s Guide gives a concrete maintenance example: when dependencies change, update relevant metadata such as versions, download locations, checksums, external references, and license identifiers; regenerate using CPython’s SBOM tooling; resolve validation errors; review the diff; and commit the SBOM with the dependency update. The guide says required identifiers should correspond to the relevant release. These are CPython’s documented practices, not a universal command sequence for every Python project.
The guide states, “Whenever adding or updating a third-party dependency, an update will likely need to be done to the SBOM in order to track the version and software identifiers.” Its maintenance page was last updated September 18, 2026.
Quick Recap
What to verify before relying on a Python SBOM
- Scope: Does it describe CPython, one package archive, an installed environment, or the complete application you deploy?
- Artifact match: Is it tied to the exact source archive, wheel, platform build, or application image in question?
- Input fidelity: Was it generated from an installed environment, manifest, lockfile, package archive, container, or source tree—and does that input reveal the contents you need?
- Platform variation: Could Python version, operating system, architecture, or bundled native dependencies change the contents?
- Useful detail: Are versions, identifiers, dependency relationships, and provenance fields sufficient for the intended scanner or inventory?
- Maintenance: Will the document be regenerated and reviewed when dependencies or build contents change?
