If a completed UPI payment went to the wrong person, contact the bank that sent it immediately through the payment app’s transaction-help option or the bank’s official grievance channel. Give the bank the transaction reference (RRN), date, amount and recipient details shown, and ask it to register and investigate a wrong-credit complaint. Keep the complaint reference. NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped, so recovery is not guaranteed.

First, check whether the payment completed

Open the transaction in the app and check its status before deciding what to report. Save a screenshot or statement entry showing the status, transaction reference or RRN, date and time, amount, and recipient details displayed. These identifiers help the bank locate the payment.

  • Completed and authorized, but sent to the wrong person: report it to the sending bank as a wrong-credit complaint and request an investigation.
  • Pending or failed: ask the bank to trace the transaction and explain the status or any applicable failed-payment reversal process. A pending or failed debit is different from a completed payment credited to an unintended recipient.
  • You did not authorize the payment: tell the bank immediately that it is an unauthorized transaction. Do not describe an unauthorized payment as a mistaken transfer you made yourself.

How to complain about a wrong UPI transfer

  1. Start in the payment app. Open the transaction and use its help, support or complaint option. NPCI says users can raise UPI grievances or check their status through the UPI app of a participating bank. BHIM users can also report declined transactions from transaction history; that guidance concerns declined transactions, not a guaranteed recovery route for a completed wrong-recipient payment. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ and BHIM UPI information.
  2. Contact the sending bank promptly. If the app route does not let you register the issue, use the bank’s official customer-care or grievance channel. State clearly that the payment completed but went to an unintended recipient. Ask the bank to register a wrong-credit complaint and explain its investigation and recovery process.
  3. Provide the transaction details. Include the RRN or transaction number, transaction date, amount, sending bank and recipient identifier shown in the app. Attach or retain the transaction record if the bank requests it. NPCI’s complaint form also requests transaction information; check the live form for its current fields and eligibility.
  4. Keep a record. Note the date you complained, the channel used and the complaint reference. Save any replies and use the reference when following up.

NPCI’s complaint portal routes a complaint to the relevant member institution for action; that institution is responsible for resolution. NPCI says fraud, unidentified or unauthorized transaction complaints should be raised with the user’s bank. The NPCI route does not guarantee that a completed, authorized wrong-recipient payment will be returned.

Can you reverse a UPI payment sent to the wrong UPI ID?

There is no stop-payment option after a UPI payment has been initiated: NPCI’s UPI FAQ states, “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” Contacting the bank is still the right step because it can investigate and explain the process available for your case, but the public guidance does not establish a universal right to unilaterally reverse a completed, authorized transfer or a guaranteed recovery time.

Do not treat rules for failed or delayed transactions as a promise that a payment successfully credited to the wrong recipient will be reversed. The outcome depends on the circumstances and institutions involved. There is no published universal recovery deadline for this specific situation in the cited guidance.

When to escalate a bank complaint to RBI

First complain to the bank or other regulated entity. If it has not responded within 30 days, or you are dissatisfied with its response, you may be able to complain through RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, subject to eligibility and maintainability requirements. The RBI scheme FAQ explains the bank-first and 30-day conditions, and RBI directs customers to its CMS process. The scheme notification sets out the scheme’s scope.

  • Never share your UPI PIN. NPCI warns: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” The PIN authorizes transactions.
  • Do not approve an unfamiliar request-money or collect instruction while trying to obtain a refund. RBI’s CMS guidance warns against responding to unknown request-money options.
  • Use contact details from the official payment app or your bank’s official website, and do not disclose credentials to someone claiming they can recover the payment.
