Before GST officials begin a search, check two separate things: whether the communication’s identifier can be verified through the official DGGI service, and what authority the document claims under section 67 of the CGST Act. A successful identifier lookup does not, by itself, establish that the legal conditions for a search are met.
What to check first
Ask to see the communication or written authorisation and note its issuing authority, date, identifier, the officer named or authorised, and the premises or scope it describes. These are practical comparison points, not a statement that each is a separately mandated statutory element.
Then identify the number shown on the document. Depending on the issuing platform and communication type, DGGI lists a DIN, eOffice Issue Number, or GSTN RFN No. for verification. Use the official DGGI communication verification service, rather than relying on a third-party checker or a copied screenshot.
How to verify a GST DIN or other identifier
- Read the document and locate its identifier: DIN, eOffice Issue Number, or GSTN RFN No.
- Open the official DGGI Public Services page and use the verification route applicable to that identifier and communication.
- Compare the lookup result with the communication in hand, including its issuer and identifying details.
- If the result is not validated, appears inconsistent, or the correct route is unclear, seek confirmation from the issuing authority using independently obtained official contact details. DGGI lists verification helpline 011-20892081 (HQ); check its current page for availability and hours before relying on it.
The DGGI service identifies the possible number types and verification route, but the available service description does not establish every interface field, result state, data lag, or fallback procedure. An unavailable or unsuccessful lookup therefore calls for confirmation through official channels; it is not, by itself, proof that a communication is fake.

Check the claimed authority under section 67
Identifier verification and statutory authority answer different questions. The official lookup concerns the document in the verification system. Section 67 of the CGST Act concerns when inspection or search powers may be exercised and by whom.
Inspection: section 67(1)
Section 67(1) addresses inspection powers and their statutory grounds. Do not treat an inspection communication as interchangeable with an authorisation for search and seizure.

Search and seizure: section 67(2)
Section 67(2) describes a proper officer not below the rank of Joint Commissioner, where the provision’s “reasons to believe” condition is met, authorising in writing another central tax officer to search and seize, or conducting the search and seizure personally. The provision specifies circumstances involving goods, documents, books, or things at a place. Read the current full text of CGST Act section 67 on the CBIC Tax Information Portal when comparing the document; the statutory conditions should not be reduced to a checklist based only on the number lookup.

- Keep a copy of the communication and, where lawful and safe, make contemporaneous notes of the identifier, issuer, time, and events.
- If the lookup is inconsistent or the legal basis is contested, seek prompt advice from a qualified Indian GST lawyer or adviser.
- Do not obstruct officials or destroy, conceal, or alter records.
