If The Witcher 3 looks pale, dim, or washed out on PC, first compare the same scene with Windows HDR turned off. If the image improves, investigate Windows HDR, Auto HDR, and your display’s picture mode before changing game graphics or boosting saturation. If it does not, check the game’s HDR calibration and then drivers and game files. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause and reverse anything that makes the picture worse.

Identify which version and display path you are using

The cause can be Windows HDR, Auto HDR, the game’s own HDR settings, a monitor or TV picture mode, or a game or driver problem. The right controls also depend on which edition of The Witcher 3 you have: CD PROJEKT RED’s September 28, 2026 Remastered announcement describes native DirectX 12 rendering and an updated HDR calibration panel. Do not assume those features or menu names match an older installation.

  • Note whether you are using the Remastered edition or an older installation, and whether the game launches in DX11 or DX12 if both options are available.
  • Check whether Windows HDR is on, whether Auto HDR is on, and whether the selected display supports HDR.
  • Use the same scene and viewing conditions for each comparison. Record the current settings so you can restore them.

Compare the game with Windows HDR off

  1. Close The Witcher 3.
  2. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the display on which you play, and turn off Windows HDR if it is enabled.
  3. Relaunch the game and compare the same scene. If the image still appears washed out, continue to the display and game checks below. If it looks normal, focus on HDR settings rather than changing unrelated graphics options.

This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. If Windows HDR is off and the picture does not change, turn it back on only if you normally use HDR, then continue testing one variable at a time.

If you use Windows HDR, isolate Auto HDR and brightness balance

Windows HDR and Auto HDR are different. Windows HDR enables HDR output for the selected HDR-capable display; Auto HDR can expand color range and brightness for supported SDR games. Microsoft explains that Auto HDR is configured after selecting the HDR display under Settings > System > Display.

  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
  1. In Settings > System > Display, select the display you actually use for the game and check its HDR status.
  2. Temporarily turn Auto HDR off, relaunch the game if needed, and compare the same scene. If that changes the image, Auto HDR conversion is involved; decide whether you prefer the result with it on or off.
  3. If you keep Windows HDR on, adjust Windows’ HDR/SDR brightness balance or HDR content brightness only to set a comfortable brightness. It is not a saturation control.

Intel notes that enabling Windows HDR can reduce saturation and sometimes brightness on some monitors, laptops, and TVs. Its explanation also distinguishes accurate HDR gamut mapping from SDR content that had looked unusually vivid because it was stretched across a display’s wider native gamut (Intel support documentation). That difference can make SDR look less vivid in HDR without proving that The Witcher 3 is defective.

Check the monitor or TV picture mode

Use the display’s on-screen display (OSD) to compare its picture modes. Exact labels and available modes vary by model.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
  • For an SDR test, disable unexpected vivid, dynamic, or wide-gamut enhancement modes. If available, compare an sRGB or Rec.709 mode.
  • When HDR is active, use the display’s appropriate HDR or wide-gamut mode rather than an SDR preset.
  • Change only the display mode, then compare the same scene. Avoid raising saturation as a first response: it may disguise a mode mismatch while making color less accurate.

Calibrate the game’s HDR if you use The Witcher 3 Remastered

In The Witcher 3 Remastered, inspect the in-game HDR calibration panel and calibrate it for your actual display. CD PROJEKT RED says the Remastered edition has an updated HDR calibration panel, but its announcement does not provide universal paper-white or peak-brightness values or a specific washed-out-color recipe. Use your display’s capabilities and the calibration screen rather than copying a generic number. For an older game installation, do not assume the same panel or controls are present.

If colors still look wrong

If HDR, Auto HDR, display mode, and the relevant game calibration do not explain the problem, move on to basic software checks. CD PROJEKT RED’s PC support index includes resources for verifying game-file integrity and updating or clean-installing graphics drivers; the reviewed support material does not identify a universal fix specifically for washed-out colors (official PC support index). The Remastered announcement also recommends current graphics drivers.
