For Steam Frame, the best settings depend first on whether a game runs on the headset or streams from a PC. Start with a refresh rate and frame-rate limit the game can sustain, then use Valve’s performance overlay to check frame pacing before reducing visual quality. For PC streaming, foveated streaming can reduce peripheral detail to save wireless bandwidth; it does not affect locally rendered games.

First, identify how you’re playing

A local game is rendered on Steam Frame itself, so its performance depends on the headset’s available resources. A PC-streamed game is rendered on the computer and sent wirelessly to the headset, so the PC and wireless connection also affect the result.

Play mode Settings that matter most What to keep in mind
Local (standalone) Refresh rate, frame-rate target, render resolution, and graphics options Foveated streaming is not relevant because there is no wireless PC video stream to optimize.
Streamed from a PC Refresh rate, frame-rate target, PC graphics settings, and foveated streaming Performance depends on the PC and wireless link as well as the headset settings.

Steam Frame compatibility badges apply to games running locally, not games streamed from a PC. A local compatibility rating therefore does not certify how well that title will stream. Valve’s compatibility information explains the scope of its review process.

Choose a refresh rate the game can sustain

Valve lists a refresh-rate range of 72–144 Hz on the Steam Frame product page. A higher refresh rate can make motion look smoother when frames arrive consistently, but it also uses more processing headroom and battery. PC Gamer’s review describes 144 Hz as experimental and reports that higher refresh settings trade away battery life and processing capacity; those observations reflect the settings and software available at the time of its review, not a guarantee for every later firmware version. PC Gamer’s Steam Frame hands-on review also describes Playtime mode as 72 Hz and settings from 90 to 144 Hz.

  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

A practical starting point is a refresh rate the game can hold steadily, rather than the highest rate the menu offers. Steam Frame Lab, an independent guide not affiliated with Valve, recommends matching the system frame-rate limit to the selected refresh rate. If the game cannot maintain that target, it advises lowering both to a more stable rate. Treat this as third-party guidance, not an official Valve rule. Steam Frame Lab’s performance-settings guide describes the approach.

Valve’s local-game compatibility review uses a minimum performance criterion of at least 72 fps at 1728×1728 during normal play. That is a developer compatibility bar, not a recommended target for every game or player. Valve also recommends that developers provide suitable motion vectors and depth so optional higher refresh rates can use improved reprojection techniques. Valve’s Steam Frame compatibility criteria provide the details.

Check frame pacing before lowering image quality

If motion looks uneven, use the in-headset performance graph to see whether frame times are within budget before changing resolution or other visual settings. Valve documents this path: Quick Access Menu > Performance > VR Settings > Show Perf Overlay In VR. The overlay can show the target game-loop rate, submitted per-eye resolution, compositor time, GPU frequency, and recent average power draw. Valve’s color indicators mean:

  • Green: frame times are within budget.
  • Yellow: the application is running at half rate.
  • Red: each frame takes more than two vsync intervals.
  • Pink: a compositor GPU preemption failure.

Use those readings to judge whether a setting change helped instead of relying only on memory. Valve also documents performance recording for locally running VR applications. Its recorded fields can include actual FPS, peak CPU and GPU frame times, reprojected frames, refresh rate, and peak power. The documentation says recording is active only when a local VR application runs; it does not establish that this feature records PC-streamed games. See Valve’s SteamVR performance documentation.

Adjust resolution and shading only when needed

Steam Frame Lab describes a Performance tab with render resolution, half-rate shading, frame-rate limit, and foveated-streaming controls. If a game struggles after you have checked its in-game graphics options, the guide suggests considering half-rate shading to reduce GPU work; the tradeoff may be reduced fine detail. It also advises checking the result in the game itself, since the visual cost depends on the title. These are independent recommendations, not Valve requirements. Steam Frame Lab’s guide covers the controls.

For PC streaming, consider foveated streaming

Foveated streaming is a streaming-side setting: it sends more detail around the area you are looking at and less detail in your peripheral vision. Steam Frame Lab recommends leaving it enabled for PC-streamed games because reducing peripheral detail can lower wireless data demand. It has no role in a game rendered locally on the headset. This recommendation comes from the independent guide, not a Valve support directive. Steam Frame Lab’s performance-settings guide explains its use.

Balance battery life against performance

Higher refresh settings can use more battery and processing capacity, according to PC Gamer’s review; lowering a target may be a reasonable trade when a game cannot deliver steady motion or when longer battery life matters more than maximum smoothness. The right choice varies with the game and software version.

Valve says a software update improved power efficiency and battery lifetime during both local gameplay and streaming by up to 12%. Valve qualifies that maximum: results vary with framerate and content, so it is not a guaranteed increase in play time for an individual user. Valve’s SteamVR update notes describe the change.

Optional comfort and connection settings

Dominant-eye tracking

Valve added Track Dominant Eye Only under VR Settings > General. Showing advanced settings is required to see the option. Valve describes it as an accessibility setting; it is optional, and the update notes do not say that it improves comfort for everyone or saves battery. See Valve’s SteamVR update notes.

Streaming connection issues

Valve’s update notes report improved wireless streaming reliability and fixes for “Error 17.” They also say the PC needs SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to reduce these connection issues. The notes identify 2.18.2 as being on the SteamVR beta branch at release; they do not establish its current stable-versus-beta status. Check SteamVR’s current release information before changing branches or treating that version as a present-day setup requirement. Valve’s update notes include the connection guidance.
