Unplug the fan first, then check the instructions for its exact model before removing the grille or blade. Some table fans allow designated parts to be removed and cleaned; others prohibit grille removal. Keep water away from the motor and electrical parts, and let any washable parts dry completely before reassembly.
Clean the fan without risking damage
- Switch off and unplug the fan. Put it on a stable surface before cleaning or removing any owner-removable part. Manufacturer guidance from Bionaire and Tefal starts with disconnecting the fan from power.
- Check the manual for your exact model. Look for the cleaning procedure and whether the grille, blade, or fastener is meant to be removed. If the manual does not describe grille removal, do not force it or follow instructions for a different fan.
- If the grille is not removable, clean only reachable areas. Use a soft cloth or, if the manual permits, a vacuum brush attachment to remove dust from the grille and accessible blade surfaces. Keep liquid away from the motor housing and controls.
- If removal is allowed, follow the manual’s exact order. Clean only the parts it identifies, using its stated method. Some instructions call for wiping with a slightly damp cloth; others allow washing specific removable parts with mild detergent and water.
- Dry and reassemble before plugging in. Let washed parts dry completely. Refit them in the order specified by the manual; do not operate the fan with wet parts or parts that are not securely fitted.
Why the model manual matters
There is no universal table-fan grille or blade removal procedure. A fan may have a safety screw, a reverse-threaded spinner, or an enclosure that is not intended to be opened for cleaning. Manufacturer instructions for one model are not a safe substitute for another model’s manual.
For example, Bestron’s safety notice for the DDF35W, dated 18 March 2025, says: “Never remove the fan protective grille to clean the blades.” By contrast, Blueair describes removing a safety screw and grille, then the blade, on its tabletop fan; it specifies washing only designated parts, drying them fully, and keeping other parts out of water. These instructions apply to their named models, not table fans generally.

Tools and cleaning materials
A soft cloth and a vacuum brush attachment are enough for accessible dust when the manual allows their use. Use a screwdriver only if the instructions for your model call for one. Do not assume you need a special cleaner, lubricant, or replacement part for routine cleaning; follow the manufacturer’s stated method instead.

What to avoid
- Do not clean a plugged-in fan or take off a part while it is connected to power.
- Do not force a grille, blade, or fastener that the manual does not identify as removable.
- Do not rinse or immerse the assembled fan, motor housing, or electrical controls.
- Do not assume a fastener turns the same way on every fan; the Zilan spinner, for example, loosens by turning clockwise.
- Do not plug in the fan until cleaned parts are fully dry and the fan is correctly reassembled.
