Toast is worth evaluating first when you need restaurant-specific workflows and connected kitchen operations; Square is a natural candidate when you want to compare published plan options and the broader Square ecosystem. “Block” is the parent company behind Square, so this comparison is between Toast and Square for Restaurants. The right choice depends on your service model, required features, hardware, support, integrations, and the terms in a current written quote.
Toast vs. Square for restaurants: what is the difference?
Toast describes a restaurant operations suite that can include fixed terminals, handheld POS devices, kiosks, kitchen display systems (KDS), kitchen printers, multi-location tools, online ordering, payroll, and vendor management. Its annual report says its in-store products run on Toast hardware and proprietary technology. Toast’s 2025 annual report is a company description of its product scope, not an independent assessment.
Square for Restaurants presents features by plan, with paid device apps and add-ons. That structure makes it important to check which plan includes each workflow you need rather than assuming every restaurant feature is included at every tier. Square’s US pricing page is the place to check its current plan structure: Square for Restaurants pricing.
These are vendor platforms, and neither is universally better. A counter-service café with straightforward orders may prioritize different capabilities from a full-service restaurant managing tabs, coursing, split checks, and kitchen routing.

Which POS is better for your restaurant?
Consider Toast first if restaurant operations are complex
Toast merits an early evaluation if your operation depends on restaurant-specific order flows, integrated kitchen operations, or continuity between the POS and KDS. Toast says its automatic offline mode extends to KDS. Treat that as a vendor-stated capability: have Toast demonstrate what happens to order entry, kitchen tickets, payments, and later synchronization during the kind of outage your restaurant could actually face. Toast’s comparison page also contains vendor claims about its product and customer data; those claims should not be treated as independent proof of performance. Toast’s Toast-versus-Square comparison.
Consider Square if published plan options and ecosystem matter
Square merits an early evaluation if you want to start by comparing a published plan structure, consider a free software plan, or use other Square services. Its plan details and paid device apps should be checked against your actual setup on the current US pricing page. Square’s comparison page says Square Register is available through major retailers including Amazon. It is Square hardware, not a neutral accessory or a device shown to work with Toast; verify the exact model and compatibility before buying. Square’s comparison page.
Match the platform to service style and daily tasks
Write down the tasks staff perform during a normal shift before comparing demos. A full-service restaurant may need to test seat and course management, tabs, split checks, tips, and kitchen routing. A quick-service operation may care more about modifiers, counter speed, kiosks, and online orders. For a bar or mixed-service venue, test the actual combination of tabs, table orders, and payment closeout. Confirm that each required feature is available at the specific plan and price being quoted.

How much does Toast or Square cost?
A headline software price is not a meaningful comparison unless both offers cover the same setup and payment mix. Toast’s official pricing page, last updated August 20, 2026, says Toast Care is included in each software subscription and available 24/7/365. Its displayed pricing applies to new single-location customers, and extra devices can add charges. Check the live terms and request a quote for your location and configuration. Toast pricing.

Square’s US restaurant pricing page lays out plan-dependent features and paid device apps. It says businesses processing over $250,000 annually can ask about custom processing and plan pricing; that is an invitation to request terms, not a guarantee of a lower rate. Verify current eligibility, rates, and plan details directly with Square. Square for Restaurants pricing.
Do not use example rates from Square’s comparison table as if they were current: that table explicitly dates its plan, hardware, and rate examples to September 4, 2024. It is not a like-for-like current quote. Square’s comparison page.

Build a comparable total-cost model
Ask both vendors for written offers covering the same number of locations and devices, expected payment volume, card mix, average ticket, transaction count, online sales, modules, and contract term. Include:
- Software subscriptions and any per-device or additional-location charges.
- Card-present and online processing rates, per-transaction fees, and any other payment charges in the quote.
- Terminals, handhelds, kitchen displays, printers, and any required accessories.
- Paid apps, KDS, integrations, payroll, delivery, and other modules your operation needs.
- Onboarding, implementation, support, cancellation, renewal, and exit terms.
Compare the offers across your expected contract term—three years if that matches your planning horizon—using your own sales and transaction assumptions. Neither a free software plan nor a displayed subscription price establishes the lowest total cost.

Ask each provider to distinguish what is included, what requires another plan or paid app, and what depends on separate hardware or a third-party integration.
Hardware, support, and switching considerations
Hardware and platform dependence
Toast says its in-store products run on Toast hardware with proprietary technology. Before signing, ask what hardware is required, what can be reused, and what happens to devices and business data if you switch providers. Square’s comparison identifies Square Register as a Square device sold through retailers including Amazon, but that does not establish compatibility with Toast or every Square setup. Confirm the current model, supported configuration, and return or exit terms directly with the provider.
Support and rollout
Toast says Toast Care is available 24/7/365 and included in each software subscription. Square’s support varies by plan, so ask for the support hours and channels that apply to the exact offer. For both platforms, get onboarding responsibilities, staff training, implementation timing, and escalation routes in writing. A support promise is most useful when you know who responds, through which channel, and what happens during a service-critical outage.
What vendor-published figures do—and do not—tell you
Toast’s comparison page reports more than 180,000 locations as of Q2 2026. It also reports a 57% lift in Toast Loyalty signups among Toast Tables customers in Q2 2025 compared with Q2 2024, based on Toast’s internal data. These are Toast-published figures, not independent market-share data or proof that a particular restaurant will see the same result. Square’s comparison page states that it serves 100,000+ restaurants, but its data sections have differing dates; check the live page and date the claim if relying on it.
