Keep the framing and light similar while taking the series, and tap again if the subject or lighting changes. This helps prevent focus and exposure from shifting between shots; it does not make different light sources share the same color.
Use one focus and exposure point for the series
Before taking a photo, iPhone automatically sets focus and exposure, and face detection can balance exposure across faces, according to Apple’s Camera guidance. In a mixed-light scene—such as a person indoors near a bright window—the automatic choice may change when you reframe. Set the important subject yourself so successive shots start from the same reference.
- Tap the important subject. In Camera, tap the person or object you want in focus. This also sets the camera’s metering reference.
- Adjust exposure in the preview. Use the on-screen exposure control to make the subject readable while retaining as much highlight detail as you want. With a bright window and dim room, there is no universal slider value: judge the subject and bright areas in the preview.
- Lock the setting. Touch and hold the focus point until AE/AF Lock appears.
- Take the series without a major change in framing. The lock stays active until you tap again. If the subject moves, the composition changes substantially, or the light shifts, tap to meter and focus again before continuing.
Locking focus and exposure is useful for a short sequence, not a permanent scene preset. It prevents the camera from making a new automatic choice with every framing change, but it cannot make a bright window and a dim interior equally exposed.
Choose between AE/AF Lock and the Exposure control
AE/AF Lock is the practical choice when you want focus and exposure to stay put while taking a series. Apple also documents a separate Exposure control: its setting stays locked until Camera is reopened. On supported models, you can preserve Exposure Adjustment in Settings so it remains available as a saved camera setting. The control and exact interface may differ by iPhone and software version; see Apple’s instructions for Camera tools and settings.

These are distinct behaviors: AE/AF Lock holds the focus and exposure point until you tap again, while the separate Exposure control can retain its adjustment until Camera is reopened. Check the controls on your iPhone before relying on a saved adjustment for a later session.
Keep color treatment consistent without expecting neutral light
Mixed light often means that different parts of a scene have different color casts. Exposure and focus controls do not remove those casts. Apple’s Photographic Styles, available on supported models, adjust the overall color look and can be refined in Camera or Photos. For a series, use the same style throughout; compare it with Standard and make restrained changes rather than giving each image a noticeably different treatment. Apple describes Photographic Styles as a way to apply a look, not a guarantee that competing light sources will become neutral. Manual white balance, aperture, and shutter speed are not universal iPhone controls. Apple documents them in its advanced camera guide for iPhone 18 Pro models only. Do not look for those controls on another model unless its own camera documentation confirms availability: Apple’s advanced iPhone camera guide.
Use Night mode carefully in dim scenes
On supported iPhones, Night mode can engage automatically in low light. Hold the phone steady until the capture finishes; for a stationary scene, resting it on a solid surface or using a tripod can reduce camera movement. Stability will not freeze a moving person or correct different color casts. Apple also notes that flash or Live Photos can deactivate Night mode. See Apple’s Night mode instructions.

Make modest matching edits in Photos
After capture, Photos offers adjustments including Exposure, Brilliance, and Highlights, and lets you compare the edited result with the original. Use those controls to make small corrections to individual images while keeping the series visually aligned. If you push one frame much further than the others, the set may look less consistent even if that frame works on its own. Editing Photographic Styles later has model and capture-format requirements, as described in Apple’s Photographic Styles guide.
