For connecting an AI assistant to your apps, compare Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot—but choose based on the exact app and task you need, not the assistant’s brand. A connector might only search and summarize information, or it might also create and update content. Availability can depend on your account, plan, region, device, and workplace settings. Gemini itself is also expanding: Google announced additional connected apps on September 23, 2026, though that announcement does not guarantee they are available to every user.
Which Gemini alternatives connect to apps?
Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Copilot all offer ways to connect an assistant with external services. They differ in supported apps, what each connection can do, and whether it belongs to a personal or workplace product. No single option is established as the best for every user, and published connector counts do not measure connector quality.
Check the service’s current app directory or settings for your own account before switching. Confirm that the specific action you need is supported; a service appearing in a directory does not mean its connector can perform every task in that service.
Claude
Anthropic says that “Connectors let Claude access your apps and services, retrieve your data, and take actions within connected services.” Claude’s documentation describes custom connectors and services that support MCP. Its directory includes services such as Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft 365, Slack, Notion, Figma, HubSpot, and Linear.

The Claude Marketplace showed 892 connectors when viewed on October 4, 2026. That is a dated snapshot of a dynamic directory—not a measure of quality or proof that Claude covers more of your needs than another assistant. See Anthropic’s Claude connector documentation and the Claude connector directory.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT connected apps can bring information and supported actions into ChatGPT. Depending on the app, a connection may let you search and reference external information, use connected sources in deep research, sync some content, or take actions. Availability varies by plan, region, workspace, role, model, and interface. You may need to authorize the app with its provider or get workspace approval. App permissions do not give it access beyond the provider’s authorization and existing workspace controls. Consult OpenAI’s connected-app documentation for current details.

Microsoft Copilot
“Copilot” covers different products. Personal Copilot can connect to Microsoft and Google accounts, including OneDrive, Outlook.com, Google Drive, Gmail, Contacts, and Calendar. You authorize the account and determine what Copilot may access; existing account permissions apply. If the Microsoft account connected to Copilot does not match the one holding your OneDrive or Outlook content, retrieval may fail. See Microsoft Support’s connection instructions.
Microsoft 365 Copilot connectors are a workplace offering with different setup and governance. Microsoft says it offers over 100 prebuilt connectors. Its documentation distinguishes connectors that index content in Microsoft Graph from federated connectors that fetch information in real time without indexing it into Microsoft 365. The documentation says source permissions are enforced. It described federated connectors as read-only while noting write actions were planned for early October 2026; check the current documentation for rollout status rather than assuming those actions are now available. Details are in Microsoft Learn’s connector overview.

How to choose the right connector
Start with the app and workflow you actually use. Work through these checks before committing to an assistant:
- Confirm app availability. Look up the exact app in the live directory or connection settings for your account, country, device, and product tier.
- Verify the action. Determine whether the connector can only find and summarize information or can also draft, create, update, send, or otherwise manage content. Read the documented capabilities and the authorization prompt.
- Check who controls access. Personal accounts and workspaces may have different eligibility and approval steps. A workplace administrator may control which apps are allowed.
- Ask how data is retrieved. Synced or indexed content is copied into a searchable index in advance; federated retrieval fetches information from its source when requested. These are different data paths, not interchangeable labels.
- Assess setup and maintenance. Find out whether the connector needs custom MCP configuration, administrator setup, or periodic reauthorization.
- Match the tool to the workflow. A built-in connector may be enough for an occasional lookup or action. A recurring process that crosses several apps may need an automation platform instead.
Is Gemini still limited to Google apps?
Do not treat Gemini as a fixed baseline with no third-party connections. Google’s Connected Apps can support Gmail and Calendar tasks, media, device control, shopping, reservations, and calls or messages on supported Android devices. In Gemini’s web interface, users can invoke an app with @. Available apps and actions vary by surface, device, country, and account type; Google says each app’s settings page lists supported and unsupported actions.

On September 23, 2026, Google announced an expansion that included productivity apps Airtable, Linear, monday.com, PandaDoc, Wispr AI, and Zoho, plus creative services Adobe, Picsart, Squarespace, and Webflow. An announcement is not proof that a connection has rolled out to every account. Check Google’s Connected Apps help and its September 2026 announcement for current availability and supported actions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen built-in connectors are not enough
If the app you need is missing, or your task must run repeatedly across several services, consider a workflow automation platform. These tools are a separate category from assistant-native connectors and may require more setup. n8n documents integrations for AI models and tooling in its AI integrations directory. Compare platforms against your required apps, technical comfort, workflow needs, and current usage limits; the available evidence does not establish a fair ranking among automation services.
