Some people report slower nail growth or brittle nails while taking a GLP-1 medication and losing significant weight. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes these nail changes in connection with weight loss, but the available evidence does not establish that the medicines directly damage nails or show how often nail changes occur.
What nail changes have people reported?
The AAD lists slower nail growth and brittle nails among symptoms patients have reported after starting GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide. Its wording links the reports to significant weight loss. That supports a possible association during treatment, but it does not prove that a medication itself caused the changes.
There is no nail-specific incidence rate in the sources discussed here, nor a controlled nail-outcome study or an evidence-based comparison of individual GLP-1 medicines by nail risk. The cause of a particular person’s nail changes therefore cannot be determined from these reports alone.
What do medication labels say—and not say—about nails?
Current US prescribing information for Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide) discusses hair loss associated with weight reduction. Hair findings are not nail findings, so those label figures cannot be used to estimate the risk of brittle nails or slower nail growth.

The AAD’s broader guidance also reflects uncertainty about how weight-loss drugs may affect skin, hair, and nails. Steven Daveluy, MD, FAAD, a dermatologist quoted by the AAD, said: “We only have early data right now, and we need more studies to fully understand how weight loss drugs can help skin diseases.” That comment concerns evidence about skin diseases broadly, not a nail-specific study.
What can you do about brittle or slow-growing nails?
- Moisturize your cuticles. The AAD recommends applying moisturizer to the cuticles to support healthy nails. Treat this as routine nail care, not a proven treatment for medication-related changes.
- Raise persistent or concerning changes with a dermatologist. A dermatologist can help assess whether symptoms may relate to the GLP-1 medication or another condition.
- Talk with your prescriber before changing treatment. Do not stop or adjust a prescribed GLP-1 because of nail changes without discussing it with the clinician who prescribed it. You can also ask the medical team what follow-up is appropriate.
