Home improvement stock prices reflect investors’ expectations for future sales, earnings, margins and guidance—not just whether homeowners are buying or selling houses. Housing activity, repair and remodeling demand, consumer finances, operating costs and company execution can all influence those expectations. They do not, by themselves, predict whether Home Depot, Lowe’s or another retailer’s stock will rise or fall.

How does housing activity affect home improvement retailers?

Home sales can bring moving-related purchases and projects from new homeowners. When housing turnover slows, those sources of demand may weaken. Financing matters, too: mortgage availability, home-equity borrowing and consumer credit can affect whether customers can afford larger projects.

Home Depot’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, identifies housing conditions and mortgage, home-equity and consumer-credit conditions as risks to demand. Lowe’s February 25, 2026 report on its fourth-quarter 2025 results also names housing turnover, mortgage financing, consumer-credit availability and home-price appreciation among factors that can affect customers. These are operating channels the companies identify; they do not quantify a particular effect on either company’s share price.

Can repair and remodeling demand offset a weak housing market?

Homeowners may keep up with necessary repairs or make smaller improvements even when they postpone a move or a major renovation. The age and condition of the housing stock, household needs and customers’ willingness to defer larger projects can shape what they buy.

In its August 18, 2026 fiscal second-quarter results, Home Depot said customers continued to engage in smaller projects and reported broad-based demand across its business. CFO Richard McPhail said, “Our second quarter results exceeded our expectations. We saw broad based demand across the business as customers continued to engage in smaller projects,” That is a report about one quarter, not evidence that smaller projects always make up for weakness in large projects.

How do affordability and consumer confidence influence demand?

Urgent repairs can be harder to put off than discretionary renovations. Inflation, slower growth in real disposable income, consumer uncertainty and housing affordability pressures can weigh on customers’ willingness or ability to undertake larger work. Lowe’s lists inflation and slower growth in real disposable income among demand risks; Home Depot’s August 2026 release discussed consumer uncertainty and housing affordability pressure alongside demand for smaller projects.

One reasonable interpretation is that tighter budgets may shift some spending toward smaller jobs rather than eliminate all home-improvement spending. The cited company reporting does not measure how much such a shift occurred, so it should be treated as a possible pattern, not a quantified result.

Why do costs, tariffs and supply constraints matter?

Sales growth does not automatically translate into stronger profits. A retailer’s results can also depend on the cost of the products it sells and the expenses of moving, stocking and selling them. Home Depot and Lowe’s identify risks involving tariffs or trade policy, commodity and other input costs, fuel or energy, labor costs and availability, and supply interruptions.

  • Product and sourcing costs: Higher input or purchase costs can put pressure on gross margins unless pricing, sourcing or product mix offsets them.
  • Labor, fuel and energy: Changes can affect operating expenses and the cost of serving customers.
  • Tariffs and trade restrictions: They may affect sourcing costs, prices or product availability. The cited disclosures do not establish that a particular tariff caused a specific price or margin change.
  • Inventory and supply: Shortages or disruptions may limit what a retailer can sell, while execution around inventory and logistics affects whether products are available when customers want them.

The companies identify these categories as risks; their actual impact must be judged from dated company results and disclosures rather than assumed from the existence of a risk.

Which company results should investors watch?

Comparable sales help show how established stores are performing, while total sales reflect the broader business. Earnings per share, margins and management guidance add context: sales can grow while costs pressure profitability, and guidance indicates what management currently expects for a future period. Investors’ reactions also depend on how reported performance compares with their prior expectations; the figures below do not establish a market consensus or a share-price response.

Home Depot: fiscal 2026 second quarter and outlook

Home Depot reported $47.9 billion in fiscal 2026 second-quarter sales, up 5.7% from the year-earlier quarter. Comparable sales rose 1.7%, and U.S. comparable sales rose 1.3%. Adjusted diluted EPS, a non-GAAP measure, was $4.92, compared with $4.68 in fiscal 2025’s second quarter. The company’s August 18, 2026 release also reported margins and reaffirmed guidance, so sales growth is only one part of the results investors may assess.

How the two companies’ fiscal 2026 outlooks compare

Company and source date Comparable-sales outlook Other fiscal 2026 outlook
Home Depot, August 18, 2026 Approximately flat to 2.0% growth Total-sales growth of approximately 2.5% to 4.5%; adjusted diluted EPS growth of approximately flat to 4.0% from fiscal 2025’s $14.69
Lowe’s, February 25, 2026 Flat to up 2% Diluted EPS of approximately $11.75 to $12.25; total-sales growth outlook not stated in the cited release

These are management outlooks, not independent forecasts or guarantees. Home Depot’s adjusted EPS guidance is explicitly adjusted, while Lowe’s cited EPS range is labeled diluted EPS; do not treat the measures as directly interchangeable. The outlooks were issued on different dates, and the companies’ fiscal calendars, business mixes and guidance definitions may differ.

How should investors distinguish a scenario from a reported result?

Management scenarios describe conditional possibilities, not realized performance. In a December 9, 2025 strategic update, Home Depot described a “Market Recovery Case” tied to momentum in housing activity and increased spending on larger projects driven by pent-up demand. McPhail said, “Our Market Recovery Case reflects our performance expectations once we see momentum in housing activity and increased spend on larger projects driven by pent-up demand.”

Home Depot’s August 2026 results are later reported performance, and its reaffirmed fiscal 2026 guidance is management’s current outlook as of that release. Neither should be confused with the earlier conditional recovery case.

What else can affect results?

Weather and natural disasters

Home Depot identifies weather and natural disasters as risks to demand and operations. An event can potentially prompt repair needs in an affected area while also disrupting stores, supply chains or normal sales patterns. The cited materials do not quantify those effects, so an investor would need company-specific reporting to assess a particular event.

Competition and execution

Demand only becomes revenue and earnings if a retailer can serve customers effectively. Home Depot identifies competition, inventory, supply-chain and strategic initiatives, and integration of acquired businesses among its risks. Store operations, product availability, customer service and the execution of investments can therefore matter alongside the broad housing market. Claims about the returns from a particular initiative or acquisition require specific company disclosures.

What these drivers can—and cannot—tell you

Housing activity, customer spending, costs and execution help explain the conditions that may shape retailers’ operating results and investors’ expectations. They are not a formula for a stock-price move. A useful assessment reads comparable sales, customer and project mix where disclosed, gross and operating margins, clearly labeled EPS and dated guidance together, while separating reported results from management outlooks and conditional scenarios.
