For cruise calls in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro, euros are the practical local currency. Albania is the key exception: its currency is the lek. Most itineraries limited to the first four countries do not require a separate currency, but a little cash is useful because card acceptance is not universal. Check your exact ports before you travel.

When should you bring cash?
Carry a modest euro reserve for small purchases, smaller merchants and backup. Cards and ATMs can cover much routine spending in major or tourist areas, but the cited local guidance does not promise acceptance everywhere. Montenegro’s tourism authority says the vast majority of catering venues, hotels, bars, fuel stations and consumer shops allow card payment, and that ATMs are available in all cities. In Croatia, a cruise operator notes card and ATM access in Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar, but recommends having enough euros for meals and drinks on some smaller islands. What if your itinerary includes Albania?
Plan to pay in lek where cash is needed, or use a card where accepted; avoid relying on euro cash being taken at every stop. The Bank of Albania displayed a reference rate of EUR 1 = ALL 91.98 on 2026-10-02. That is a dated central-bank rate, not a retail exchange quote or a guarantee of the rate and fees offered to travelers. Bank of Albania: official exchange rate.
How to avoid payment surprises
- Check the itinerary country by country: the common coastal calls in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro use euros; Albania uses lek.
- Before departure, review your card issuer’s foreign-transaction fee, ATM withdrawal fee, cash-advance rules, exchange markup and withdrawal limits.
- If a card terminal or ATM offers to charge in your home currency instead of the local currency, compare the displayed conversion and fees with your issuer’s terms before accepting. There is no universally best choice established for every card and transaction.
- Use a card plus a modest cash reserve rather than depending on one payment method. For EU euro payments, the European Commission says the charge should not exceed the equivalent domestic electronically processed euro payment; this does not mean your bank waives foreign-transaction, ATM, cash-advance or conversion fees.
