That could help a laptop use less power during static-screen periods, but the available sources do not establish a measured battery-life increase or a number of extra hours.
How Panel Replay is intended to save power
A GPU can keep fetching frames from memory and transmitting them over the display link even when the picture has not changed. Those repeated operations consume memory bandwidth and keep parts of the display path active. AMD engineers described Panel Replay as a way for a compatible display system to repeat a stored image during such static-screen periods, reducing that unnecessary work and its associated power draw.
The engineering description appeared in an AMDGPU Linux display-driver patch series for DCN 3.1.4 and newer, posted July 10, 2023. It describes a power-management mechanism and its intended benefits; it is not a published battery test or a promise that a laptop will last longer by a particular amount.
How it differs from PSR
AMD’s patch authors describe Panel Replay as keeping the source and display sink synchronized while replaying the image. They cite that synchronization as the basis for lower-latency transitions back to live frames, broader use cases, and easier control of the sink’s refresh rate during replay. These are design claims in the engineering notes, not independently measured gaming benchmarks.

| Comparison point | Panel Replay | PSR |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronization during replay | AMD’s patch authors say source and sink remain synchronized. | The cited engineering excerpt does not specify synchronization behavior for PSR. |
| Return to live frames | The authors say synchronization permits lower-latency transitions. | No comparable latency figure or result is stated in the cited engineering excerpt. |
| Use cases and refresh control | The authors say synchronization supports more use cases and easier sink refresh-rate control during replay. | No comparable details are stated in the cited engineering excerpt. |
| Compatibility | Requires compatible display hardware and software; the patch series addresses DCN 3.1.4 and newer. | Compatibility depends on the particular implementation; no model-by-model comparison is established by the cited excerpt. |
The comparison is limited to what AMD’s engineering notes state; it does not establish that every Panel Replay implementation will outperform every PSR implementation.
What is known—and not known—about battery life
The intended benefit is lower display-system power during periods when the image remains unchanged. The reviewed sources provide no measured battery-life gain attributable specifically to Panel Replay. HotHardware’s June 20, 2023 coverage likewise noted that the feature surfaced in Linux driver patches rather than an AMD product announcement, and that power savings could not be quantified without testing. There is therefore no supported figure for extra gaming hours or a percentage improvement.

Because the mechanism targets unchanged-screen periods, its relevance depends on what the laptop is doing. A static desktop or other still image is a clearer fit for the described behavior than continuously changing gameplay. The sources do not establish how much time a particular user spends in eligible conditions or how that would translate into runtime.
FreeSync certification does not confirm Panel Replay support
AMD’s FreeSync technology synchronizes a display’s refresh rate with the frame rate of compatible graphics hardware. AMD’s current FreeSync information also lists laptop models and certification tiers, but that general FreeSync listing does not establish that any listed laptop implements Panel Replay.

An AMDGPU mailing-list discussion posted March 29, 2026 describes display artifacts during selective Replay updates on DCN 3.14 Phoenix/Hawk Point systems, including laptops with Ryzen 8000-series integrated Radeon 780M graphics. The discussion proposes timing fixes and describes a full-frame-update workaround intended to retain static-screen Replay while avoiding the affected selective-update firmware path. It also says later DCN 3.2+ generations were not affected by that particular selective-update issue.

This is a development mailing-list thread, not confirmation that a proposed fix shipped in every Linux distribution or vendor driver. The thread distinguishes AMD FreeSync Replay on DCN 3.14 from VESA Panel Replay; the similarly named features should not be treated as interchangeable. Anyone troubleshooting artifacts should check the current status for their exact hardware, firmware, and driver rather than assume a proposed patch is already available.
