To find games that feel like a fit without simply following the biggest releases, start with a game you already enjoy, identify the qualities you want to repeat, and use tags, recommendation tools, curators, and community posts to build a shortlist. “Hidden gem” is relative: the goal is to find unfamiliar games that suit you, not to uncover a universally overlooked best game.

Start with what you want from your next game

Choose one game you like and break down what works for you. A genre alone may be too broad: two games labeled “RPG,” for example, can differ sharply in pacing, difficulty, mood, and how much they emphasize story.

Write down a few qualities that matter most. Useful comparison points include:

  • Genre and core mechanic: What do you do repeatedly, and what makes that loop satisfying?
  • Mood and visual style: Do you want something cozy, tense, strange, colorful, or atmospheric?
  • Pacing and story: Are you looking for short sessions, slow exploration, or a story-led experience?
  • Complexity and difficulty: Would you prefer an approachable game or one that asks you to learn demanding systems?
  • Play style: Do you need solo play, co-op, or another specific multiplayer setup?

Keep the list selective. Treat these qualities as search filters and ways to judge a candidate, not as a formula that guarantees a good recommendation.

Use Steam tags to find neighboring games

On Steam, tags can help you move from a known favorite to less familiar titles. Valve’s developer documentation says a game’s top 20 tags determine the tag pages and similar browse views where it can appear. Steam Tags documentation

Open a game you like, inspect its tags, and follow the ones that describe the experience you want to repeat. Tag pages can reveal games beyond the obvious bestsellers, but a shared label does not prove that two games play alike. Check each candidate’s description, screenshots, and gameplay material against your shortlist.

Tune Steam’s recommendation tools

Interactive Recommender

Steam’s Interactive Recommender uses play patterns and offers tag-based filtering, along with controls for balancing niche versus popular games and recent versus classic games. Valve described it as a way to make personalized recommendations “based on your patterns of play.” Open the Steam Interactive Recommender Valve’s announcement

Use the controls to narrow the results toward your stated preferences, then judge the individual games rather than treating their ranking as proof of fit. Valve notes that the recommender cannot suggest new releases that have no player-history data.

Discovery Queue

When you are interested in newer releases, use Steam’s Discovery Queue as a separate route. Valve describes it as a way to help surface new titles, including releases that the Interactive Recommender cannot yet recommend because there is no play data. Steam Discovery Queue and store discovery

Follow curators whose taste you understand

Steam Curators can provide another route to candidates. Recommendations from curators you follow appear on Steam tag and genre pages. Steam Discovery Update: Curators

Look for curators who explain why they recommend a game and whose preferences overlap with yours. A useful note about a game’s pace, mechanics, or audience gives you something concrete to compare with your own list. A curator’s recommendation is a lead to inspect, not a guarantee that every pick will suit you.

Use community suggestions as leads, not proof

Players also mention routes such as trying demos, reading developer posts, browsing itch.io, following Reddit comments, and clicking through “More Like This.” Those are examples from an individual response to a community question about finding small PC games before they trend—not evidence that one method works best for most players. Use community posts to collect names and search terms, then verify each title on its own store page. Recommendations are most useful when the person explains what they liked and how that matches your preferences.

Compare candidates before adding them to your library

Keep a short list rather than saving every intriguing result. For each game, compare the details that matter to you and check the current store page for platform, release state, multiplayer support, and price. These details can vary by game and may change.

What to compare Question to ask
Core loop Does the main activity resemble what you enjoy, or only share a broad genre tag?
Mood and pace Does the tone and speed match the experience you want right now?
Story and complexity How much narrative, learning, or challenge are you looking for?
Play options Does it support the solo or multiplayer style you need?
Practical details Is it available for your platform, in the release state you expect, and at a price you accept?

Before committing, use the store description and visual or gameplay material to check your assumptions. If a demo is available, trying it can help you assess the feel directly; its availability depends on the individual game.

A repeatable discovery routine

  1. Pick a reference game. Name one you already enjoy.
  2. Choose a few traits to repeat. Prioritize mechanics, mood, pace, difficulty, story focus, or solo/co-op needs.
  3. Explore related tags and recommendations. Use Steam tag pages, the Interactive Recommender, and the Discovery Queue for different kinds of leads.
  4. Add trusted human perspectives. Follow curators and community contributors who explain their recommendations.
  5. Verify and compare. Check each candidate’s actual gameplay material and current store details against your priorities.
  6. Keep only plausible fits. A short, reasoned shortlist is more useful than a long list of titles collected from loosely related tags.
