Google now calls extensions Connected Apps. Availability and behavior vary by account type, device, location, language, Gemini app, and mode, so there is no single fix for every problem.
Start by identifying your account and Gemini surface
Note which Gemini surface you are using—web, Android, iOS, or another supported surface—and whether you are signed in with a personal Google Account or a work or school account. Also identify the app you want Gemini to use. The Connected Apps list can differ by account, device, country, and Gemini app.
Check Google’s Connected Apps availability and requirements table for that specific integration. It lists requirements such as account type, location, language, device, Gemini surface or mode, and, where applicable, subscription. An app being unavailable on your current setup is different from a connection failure.
If an app is missing or will not connect
- Sign in to Gemini. Connected Apps require you to be signed in. Open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and see whether the desired app is listed for the account and surface you are using. Google’s Connected Apps help page explains how to manage the list.
- Check Keep Activity. Google says that when Keep Activity is off, Connected Apps are unavailable on gemini.google.com, iOS devices, and smart watches. On Android, only Device assistance, Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp remain available; this exception does not apply to every integration. Check the availability table for your particular app before changing settings.
- For Workspace, verify the account and Gmail settings. Make sure Gemini and Google Workspace are signed in to the same account, Keep Activity is on, and Gmail Smart features in other Google products is enabled. After changing the Gmail Smart features setting, reload Gemini and try again. See Google’s instructions for connecting Google Workspace to Gemini.
- For a work or school account, check organization policy. Your Workspace administrator controls access to Connected Apps and may need to enable it. Ask whether your organization and Workspace edition permit the connection. Do not try to bypass an organization restriction; Google describes the requirements in its work or school account guidance.
- Recheck eligibility for the specific app. Use Google’s live requirements table to confirm the current account, region, language, device, and Gemini app or mode requirements. These details can change over time.
If Gemini connects but does not use the app
In each new conversation, explicitly name the app or service you want Gemini to use, or select it with @ where that option is available. For Workspace content, include useful words from the email or document and say whether you are looking for an email, file, or other content. Google advises against pasting a document or email URL into the prompt. Its Connected Apps instructions and Workspace connection guidance describe these prompt expectations.

For a diagnostic test, ask for one clear action involving one service, such as finding or summarizing an eligible item. Combining several apps and tasks makes it harder to tell what failed. For work or school accounts, Google notes that if a request requires multiple apps and a required service is disabled, neither action may complete; a simpler prompt helps isolate the issue but does not guarantee success.
If the result is incomplete or unhelpful
Check what the app actually supports
Open the app’s “Learn more” details in Connected Apps for supported and unsupported actions and example prompts. A connection does not give Gemini every capability of the underlying service. For Workspace, documented limits include access to certain comments, images, and non-document Drive media, as well as management actions such as moving Drive content. If the task is outside the listed capabilities, treat that as a feature limit rather than a connection failure. Google’s Workspace Connected Apps help describes these boundaries.

Verify the source content
Google warns that Gemini can return hallucinated or outdated information from connected apps. Inspect any sources attached to the answer and compare them with the current content in the underlying app. Do not assume that a successful connection makes every response complete or current. For work or school accounts, Google also advises users to review answers and sources in its Connected Apps guidance.

Connected Apps are not a universal list shared across all Gemini experiences. For example, Google Home’s current help page describes connecting it in the Gemini mobile app with a personal Google Account, and says it is not available in Gemini web, Google Messages, or Live chats. Google also cautions that smart-home controls are for convenience and should not be relied on for safety- or security-critical requests. Check the requirements table for other apps rather than assuming they share Google Home’s restrictions.
