BDXL is a Blu-ray Disc Association format expansion for recordable and rewritable discs. Its top capacity is 128GB on four-layer, write-once BD-R media—not a promise that any Blu-ray drive can use the disc or that it is a commercial movie Blu-ray. A compatible BDXL recorder and matching media are required.

What is BDXL?

BDXL extends Blu-ray Disc with higher-capacity recordable and rewritable media built from three or four recording layers. The Blu-ray Disc Association announced write-once options at 100GB and 128GB, plus a rewritable option at 100GB. The association described the format as useful for professional archiving, but that stated aim is not independent evidence of a particular disc’s archival lifetime or reliability. In the official Blu-ray Disc License Office FAQ, the 100GB and 128GB recordable format is called R3; the 100GB rewritable format is RE4. Those labels identify format variants, not interchangeable capabilities. Blu-ray Disc License Office FAQ

How much data can a BDXL disc hold?

Media type Capacity Layers Recording behavior and stated speed
BD-R XL (R3) 100GB Three Write-once; R3 is specified at 2x and 4x in the License Office FAQ.
BD-R XL (R3) 128GB Four Write-once; R3 is specified at 2x and 4x in the License Office FAQ. Sony lists a 128GB, four-layer BD-R product rated 4x. Sony product details
BD-RE XL (RE4) 100GB Three Rewritable; RE4 is specified at 2x in BDAV.

The capacity and layer mapping is given in the association’s announcement and is consistent with Dynabook’s format overview. Blu-ray Disc Association · Dynabook BDXL overview

Do not assume every BDXL specification page describes the same variant. The License Office’s R4 specification page describes a multilayer BDAV recordable format supporting 100GB and 128GB, with UDF 2.5/2.6; it says that version was defined in December 2017. The FAQ separately describes R3 recording speeds and RE4 rewritable capability. R4 format specification

Can a Blu-ray drive read a 128GB BDXL disc?

Only if the particular drive supports BDXL and the disc’s capacity and layer count. “Blu-ray” support alone does not establish BDXL compatibility. Sony warns that some devices do not support its 128GB BD-R XL media and directs users to check device compatibility. The License Office materials also treat BDXL support as a distinct category. Before buying or recording, check the exact recorder’s specifications and verify both “BDXL” and support for the capacity/layer count you intend to use. For 128GB media, look for explicit four-layer or quad-layer support. A manufacturer datasheet for Buffalo’s BRXL-16U3, for example, documents an external BDXL burner with support for triple- and quad-layer BD-R XL media and writing up to 128GB; the document is an older 2013 datasheet, not evidence of current availability. Is a 128GB BDXL disc rewritable?

No. In the described BDXL capacity range, 128GB is the four-layer write-once BD-R option. The listed rewritable format is 100GB, three-layer BD-RE (RE4). Check the disc label as well as the recorder specification so you do not confuse BD-R media with BD-RE media.

Can you burn a movie onto a BDXL disc?

Not as a commercial movie Blu-ray based on the BDXL recordable format described here. The Blu-ray Disc License Office FAQ answers “No” to whether movie contents can be recorded on these new-format discs. BDXL capacity therefore should not be interpreted as a blank commercial movie disc that ordinary Blu-ray players will play. Blu-ray Disc License Office FAQ

What to check before buying BDXL media

  1. Identify the media type: choose BD-R for write-once recording or BD-RE for rewritable use. The described 128GB capacity is BD-R; the rewritable option is 100GB.
  2. Check the exact recorder: confirm explicit BDXL support, then confirm support for the disc’s capacity and layer count—not just generic Blu-ray support.
  3. Check intended use: BDXL recordable media is not a substitute for a commercial movie Blu-ray.
  4. Verify current stock: the cited Sony product page says Sony Store sales have ended, and the Buffalo datasheet is an older product document. Neither establishes present retailer inventory or availability of compatible media and burners. Sony product page · Buffalo datasheet
