Consider 1 TB if you often record ProRes, shoot for long stretches, or keep many original files on the phone. If you mainly use HEVC or H.264 and routinely offload footage, 256 GB may be enough. These are workflow recommendations, not guaranteed capacity formulas: file sizes vary with format, resolution, frame rate, image content, and how long you retain originals.
Choose storage for your workflow
| Workflow | Practical starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly still photos and occasional short clips | 256 GB | Can be reasonable if you regularly back up or move photos off the phone. Apple does not publish a universal number of photos per gigabyte. |
| Professional stills and frequent HEVC/H.264 video | 512 GB | Provides a more comfortable working buffer for active projects and local originals. |
| Frequent ProRes or long recording days | 1 TB | Offers more internal working space when retaining large original files. External recording may reduce the amount stored on the phone if your model and setup support it. |
These tiers are practical guidance, not the result of a measured capacity test or an Apple storage recommendation. Apple’s current iPhone 17 specifications list HEVC and H.264 video formats and 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 60 fps on the standard model; check the specifications for your exact iPhone before relying on a particular mode: Apple iPhone 17 technical specifications.
Why ProRes needs more room
Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. The actual data rate varies with codec, image content, frame size, and frame rate, so a single minutes-per-gigabyte estimate would not apply reliably to every recording.
ProRes also requires at least 10% of device storage to remain free while recording. In other words, do not treat the full advertised capacity as camera-file space: allow room for iOS, apps, other files, exports, and that free-space requirement. Apple’s mode and capacity details are in About Apple ProRes on iPhone; its technical explanation of variable data rates is in the Apple ProRes technical document.

Check which ProRes modes your capacity supports
Apple’s support table limits 128 GB models to ProRes 1080p at 25 or 30 fps. It lists 1080p at 60 fps for 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities, and lists 4K ProRes at 24, 25, and 30 fps for supported models. The available modes depend on both model and capacity, so check Apple’s current table for your exact device rather than assuming every iPhone supports the same settings.
When an external drive can help
External ProRes recording is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro families. Apple lists external 4K60 ProRes for those families, and 4K120 ProRes for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro families. This shifts some recording storage to the drive rather than the iPhone, but it requires a compatible setup:

Five questions to answer before choosing
- Which format will you capture? HEVC and H.264 are listed video formats on the standard iPhone 17; ProRes can take substantially more space.
- What resolution and frame rate do you need? Higher-demand modes such as 4K60 or 4K120 ProRes affect both storage use and recording compatibility.
- How long are your shoots? Long sessions and repeated takes increase the amount of footage you may need to keep available.
- Where will originals live? Keeping them on the phone calls for more capacity than regularly moving them to a computer, drive, or cloud workflow.
- How much working space do you need between transfers? Reserve room for edits, exports, apps, and the free-space buffer rather than planning to fill the phone with camera files.
Why fixed photo counts and recording-minute estimates mislead
Apple’s cited materials do not establish a guaranteed number of professional photos or video minutes per gigabyte across iPhone models and settings. ProRes data rates vary with codec, image content, frame size, and frame rate, while still-photo file sizes also depend on capture conditions. Treat any fixed count as an estimate for a specific setup, not a dependable universal rule.
