Arcanum is an Android note-taking app whose developer says it is designed for quick capture, a simple flat note list, and a few focused features. But “puts Google Keep, OneNote, and Obsidian to shame” is an opinion, not a result established by a controlled comparison. The available account describes Arcanum 1.0.0 and said it was in closed testing when published; it does not establish whether the app is publicly available now.
What is Arcanum?
Arcanum is a note-taking project for Android by developer aoto. The developer’s August 2026 article showed version 1.0.0 and described the app during closed testing for Play Store distribution. That is a dated status report, not confirmation of its present availability. Read the developer’s article.
The motivation was personal preference rather than a claim of an independently tested breakthrough. As aoto put it: “I wanted a note app that took Keep’s functionality and sharpened it to my own liking.”
How Arcanum is meant to organize notes
The developer describes a design for capturing notes quickly on a phone without requiring folders, tags, or a complex hierarchy. Notes sit in a flat list, with pinning, manual reordering, and search offered as ways to bring important items forward or find them again. These are the developer’s feature descriptions, not results from hands-on testing.

What the described features do
Locking and protected export
The app is described as having a note-lock feature and password-protected encrypted export. The developer presents export as a way to protect sensitive information, such as app recovery passcodes. The available description does not specify the encryption design, how a lost password is handled, or what threats the protection is intended to resist, so it is not enough to assess the security of the feature.
YouTube links
According to the developer, Arcanum can embed a YouTube link by retaining the video ID from a shared URL. Playing it calls the official YouTube player; Arcanum does not store the video file itself.

Does it really put Keep, OneNote, and Obsidian to shame?
There is no sourced, feature-by-feature test across these four apps in the available evidence. In particular, it does not establish comparative speed, reliability, security, or overall value, and it gives no equivalent feature assessment for OneNote. The headline’s “to shame” wording should therefore be read as the developer’s preference and the article’s framing—not as a verified verdict for every Android user.
The limited official context also does not settle the comparison. Google says Keep files are encrypted in transit and at rest, and that it does not use content in personal-content apps such as Keep for advertising. That does not prove every user’s data-handling needs are met, but cloud reliance by itself is not evidence that Keep is insecure. Google Keep privacy information.

Obsidian’s Android documentation notes that a vault stored in device storage can be accessed by other apps and services, including third-party sync tools, and remains on the device if Obsidian is uninstalled. That is a specific trade-off about file access and sync flexibility, not a complete comparison with Arcanum. Obsidian’s Android documentation.
Who might prefer the approach?
Based on the developer’s stated design, Arcanum may appeal to someone who wants a straightforward phone-first list and finds folder- or tag-heavy organization cumbersome. The described lock, export, and YouTube-link handling may also be relevant, but their practical security and reliability have not been independently assessed here.

Before choosing it over an established app, check whether Arcanum is currently available for your device and whether its storage, backup, export, and sync behavior suit your needs. A useful personal comparison is to try the same everyday tasks in each app: capture a note, find it later, move it between devices, and recover it from a backup. The available evidence does not score all four apps on those criteria.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line
Arcanum is an interesting, developer-described alternative built around quick capture and a flat list, with locking, encrypted export, and YouTube-link support among its stated features. The evidence supports describing what its developer intended—not saying it has beaten Google Keep, OneNote, or Obsidian. Its current availability and the details needed to judge its security and cross-device workflow remain unestablished.
