The ATI Radeon 9600 XT is a 2003-era graphics card family for legacy AGP PCs. The launch configuration was specified with a 500 MHz core, 600 MHz DDR memory clock, four pixel pipelines, a 128-bit memory interface, and 128 MB of memory. Those details are a useful baseline, not a guarantee that every card labeled “9600 XT” has the same memory, clocks, or video connections.

ATI Radeon 9600 XT specifications

ATI announced the Radeon 9600 XT in September 2003. A contemporary PC Watch report published October 2, 2003, positioned it above the Radeon 9600 PRO and described the XT as a higher-clocked version. The table separates those launch figures from the details documented for a specific Gigabyte board.

Specification 9600 XT launch configuration Gigabyte GV-R96X128D
Core clock 500 MHz (PC Watch, 2003) 500 MHz (Gigabyte, March 2004 brochure)
Memory clock 600 MHz DDR (PC Watch, 2003) 600 MHz (Gigabyte, March 2004 brochure)
Memory capacity 128 MB DDR (PC Watch, 2003) 128 MB (Gigabyte, March 2004 brochure)
Memory interface 128-bit (PC Watch, 2003) 128-bit (Gigabyte, March 2004 brochure)
Pixel pipelines 4 (PC Watch, 2003) 4 (Gigabyte, March 2004 brochure)
Interface AGP board; specific version not stated (PC Watch, 2003) AGP 8X (Gigabyte, March 2004 brochure)
Pixel fill rate 2 Gpixels/s (PC Watch, 2003) Not stated (Gigabyte, March 2004 brochure)

PC Watch reported that the 9600 PRO ran a 400 MHz core, compared with 500 MHz for the XT, while both were listed at a 600 MHz memory clock. It gave an expected launch retail price of about US$200; that is a 2003 estimate, not a current value. PC Watch’s October 2, 2003 report.

Why Radeon 9600 XT cards have different specifications

Radeon 9600 XT names the graphics chip family, but manufacturers built different cards around it. Memory capacity, clock settings, video capture and output features, and connector layouts can differ by exact board model. For example, Gigabyte’s March 2004 brochure lists the GV-R96X128D at 500/600 MHz, while its GV-R96X128DU has VIVO and a 550 MHz core; it also lists a GV-R96X256V with VIVO. These are variant-specific manufacturer listings, not specifications to apply to every 9600 XT.

  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

An ASUS A9600XT/TVD/N/128M report describes a 128 MB card with TV input/output and nominal 500/600 MHz clocks. It also says ATI OVERDRIVE could raise the core to a maximum of 550 MHz when the temperature sensor detected thermal headroom. That reported feature does not mean every card reaches 550 MHz or that the clock is guaranteed in every system. ASUS’s report on the A9600XT/TVD/N/128M.

Gigabyte’s December 2003 release says its GV-R96X128D used a 500 MHz core and four rendering pipelines and required no secondary power connector. Treat that power detail as specific to that named card rather than a universal property of the family. Gigabyte’s GV-R96X128D release.

Will a Radeon 9600 XT work in an AGP computer?

The cited Gigabyte examples are AGP cards, and its brochure specifies AGP 8X for the documented models. That confirms the interface for those boards; it does not establish compatibility with every AGP motherboard. Check the computer’s documentation and the exact card’s specifications before buying or installing it.

  • Confirm the motherboard has an AGP slot and whether it supports the card’s specified AGP mode. The available model records do not establish compatibility across all AGP systems.
  • Compare the card’s bracket and connectors with the space and openings in the computer case.
  • Check any auxiliary power requirement on the exact model. Gigabyte’s no-secondary-connector statement applies to the GV-R96X128D specifically.
  • For VIVO or TV-output functions, verify the card’s input/output arrangement and whether its documentation calls for an adapter.

A card’s historical DirectX 9 capability does not establish compatibility with a current operating system, driver setup, or game. No modern performance or compatibility testing is documented here.

What to check when buying a used Radeon 9600 XT

Because the family contains board variations and this is legacy hardware, identify the physical card by its manufacturer and model number rather than relying on the GPU name in a listing.

  1. Ask for a clear photo of the card label or model marking and match it to manufacturer documentation.
  2. Confirm memory capacity, memory interface, and clocks against that exact board’s listing. Do not assume the launch configuration applies to a partner card.
  3. Inspect the interface edge, bracket, video connectors, and any included adapter. For a VIVO or TVD card, confirm the adapter is specified for that model.
  4. Ask whether the card has been tested in operation and check its physical condition, including the fan and visible damage.
  5. Verify your AGP system’s requirements and physical fit before completing a purchase.

These checks help establish whether a particular used card matches your restoration needs; they do not imply that any specific listing is available, tested, or fairly priced.
