There is no official definition or universal cutoff for sales, players, reviews, or mentions. The label is most useful when you explain both parts: what makes the game worthwhile, and who has yet to discover it.
What “hidden gem” means—and what it doesn’t
“Hidden gem” is an informal, audience-relative description, not a rating category. It joins two separate claims: the game has qualities that a speaker finds notably rewarding, and it has received less awareness or attention than might be expected in a specified audience or context.
Those claims need different evidence. A small audience does not prove a game is good, and strong reviews do not by themselves show that it is under-discovered. There is no authoritative definition, validated score, or representative statistic establishing what share of high-quality games remain undiscovered. A Reddit discussion asking “What makes a game a hidden gem?” illustrates one common use of the phrase, but one discussion is not evidence of what all players think.
A precise description names the audience and the experience: “For players who enjoy [specific experience], this game stands out because [specific design or emotional payoff], although it remains less familiar than comparable titles among [named audience or context].” That is a practical editorial framing, not a numerical test.

How to explain what makes the game a “gem”
Describe what the player does and how the design makes that experience rewarding. Broad praise such as “beautiful,” “unique,” or “underrated” leaves readers without a reason to care. Analyze the game along dimensions that connect its design to a likely audience.
Core interaction and payoff
Identify the actions players repeat: exploring, planning, building, solving, competing, or something else. Explain what makes those actions satisfying, expressive, or surprising, and what payoff follows. A distinctive mechanic matters most when you can show how it changes the player’s moment-to-moment experience.

Coherence across the game
Consider whether the mechanics, world or level structure, audiovisual presentation, and narrative reinforce a recognizable experience. A game need not excel in every area; the useful question is whether its parts support the appeal you are describing.
Audience fit, pacing, and access
Say who is likely to appreciate the design and which genre expectations shape that response. Explain how the game introduces its systems and whether its learning curve serves the intended experience. A demanding opening, for example, may be a barrier for some players and part of the appeal for others; describe the trade-off rather than treating one preference as universal.

How to assess player reception without overclaiming
Reception is evidence from a particular group of people, not a universal verdict. Specify whether you mean critic reviews, player reviews, community discussion, or another source. When available, give readers context about the size and composition of the sample, the game version and platform, and the period covered.
Separate what players praise from what they criticize, and check whether the comments concern the same experience. Reviews for different platforms, versions, or points in a game’s release history may not be comparable. A handful of enthusiastic posts can suggest what some players value; they cannot establish broad consensus or prove that the wider audience has overlooked the game.

How discovery affects visibility
Discovery is a different question from design quality. Players find games through storefront recommendations, tags, genre pages, community discussion, critics, and other routes. Those mechanisms shape which titles are seen, but visibility is not a measure of whether a game is well designed.
Steam’s platform-specific signals
Valve’s Steamworks documentation on visibility describes placements such as the Discovery Queue and release queues, as well as factors including tags, language support, purchases, and play. Its marketing tools documentation also describes recommendations on home pages, discovery queues, and tag or genre pages. These are Steam-specific features and signals, not universal rules for other storefronts or direct indicators of quality. Steamworks says, “If your product is doing really well, it may get bumped up into the Main capsule on the front page.” That is platform guidance about visibility, not evidence that a storefront placement measures a game’s artistic or design merit.

Release volume is not an attention measure
VideoGamesCritic reports 20,636 games released on Steam in 2025, compared with 2,371 in 2015, describing the figures as a walk of Steam’s store rather than an estimate. Those counts provide dated context for the volume of releases; they do not measure how many players noticed a particular game, whether a title is good, or why it received limited attention. See VideoGamesCritic’s findings on games, critics, and players.
A 2014-era Game Developer article on a possible hidden-gem discovery algorithm frames the challenge as finding games players like before they become popular, while noting limitations in ownership and playtime data. It is historical context for the measurement problem, not current market evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make comparisons fair and the claim specific
Before calling a title overlooked, decide what you are comparing it with. A fair comparison keeps relevant factors aligned:
- Genre and intended audience: Compare games likely to appeal to similar players, not titles with unrelated audiences.
- Platform and period: Explain where and when the game was available or discussed.
- Reception sample: Distinguish reviews, community comments, and other evidence rather than treating them as interchangeable.
- Visibility context: Identify the discovery routes available to that audience. A low review count or one storefront placement alone does not show that a game was buried.
Limited awareness can have many causes. Without evidence for a specific title, do not attribute it to a storefront, audience, or platform failure. Nor should design, reception, and visibility be averaged into a made-up “hidden gem score”: they answer different questions.

A practical way to use the label
- Name the audience. State which players or community you mean and, where relevant, the platform or period.
- Show the design evidence. Describe the core interaction, how the systems and presentation support it, and the payoff players may value.
- Ground the reception claim. Identify whose praise or criticism you are using and the limits of that sample.
- Explain the visibility comparison. Say what comparable games or audience context make this title less familiar; do not infer obscurity from a single number or placement.
- Keep the conclusion proportional. Present “hidden gem” as a reasoned recommendation for a defined audience, not an objective status.
