Inspect a used Hyundai Santro in this order: verify its identity and paperwork, check for accident repairs and underbody rust, assess the engine and warning lights, test equipment, then drive it on a representative route. For hidden faults or repairs, make the sale conditional on an independent professional inspection. Compare the asking price with cars of the same year, trim, gearbox, fuel type, mileage, records, location, and condition—not with an old advertised range.
What to check before you inspect the car
Ask the seller for the registration certificate (RC), insurance and pollution documents, service records, and details of any outstanding loan. Arrange to see the car in good daylight, ideally before the engine has been started that day, so you can assess the body clearly and observe a cold start. Bring someone experienced with cars if possible; a visual check cannot establish every mechanical or structural fault.
Match the car to its documents
- Compare the RC details with the vehicle, including its chassis and engine numbers.
- Review ownership and service records, and check whether the recorded mileage is consistent with invoices or service-book entries. Question a low odometer reading that does not fit the car’s age or documentation; records can support a mileage history but do not prove that the odometer has never been altered.
- Check whether a loan or hypothecation is recorded. If it is, confirm that the seller can provide the lender clearance required for transfer.
- Check that the insurance and pollution documents are available and that their details correspond to the vehicle.
How to spot accident repairs and underbody problems
Walk around the car in good light. Compare panel gaps from side to side, and look for differences in paint shade, finish, or texture that may indicate repainting. These are clues, not proof of an accident: a professional can investigate repairs that are difficult to see.
Look beneath the car for rust, impact marks, and damage to the underbody. The Santro-specific buying guide notes limited factory underbody protection, making this an important area to inspect. Do not crawl under a vehicle that is supported only by a jack. An inspection professional can use a paint-thickness gauge to help identify repainting or filler and assess the underbody more safely.

How to check the engine, warning lights, and equipment
Cold start and engine bay
If possible, ask to start the car while the engine is cold. Listen for abnormal noise and watch for smoke or an uneven idle. Check engine-oil and coolant levels and condition, and look for fluid leaks. These checks can reveal reasons to investigate further, but a quiet start or clean engine bay is not a mechanical guarantee.
Dashboard warnings
Notice which warning lights appear when the ignition is switched on and whether they go out after starting, using the owner’s manual for the specific car. The Hyundai manual says the malfunction indicator lamp signals an emission-control-system fault; continued driving with it on may affect drivability or fuel economy, and Hyundai recommends dealer inspection. Treat an illuminated ABS or brake-fluid/parking-brake warning as a reason to stop and get the system checked rather than assuming it is a minor issue.

Features and consumables
- Check all tyres, including the spare, for damage and uneven wear.
- Test the lights, wipers, air conditioning, belts, and electrical features fitted to that trim.
- If the car has a touchscreen or infotainment system, check that it powers on and responds. Equipment varies by year and trim, so compare it with the exact vehicle’s specification.
- Inspect brake pads and filters where accessible, or ask a mechanic to assess them. Include tyres, pads, and filters in your estimate of near-term maintenance.
What to assess on the test drive
Drive on a route that includes ordinary turns, safe braking, and uneven surfaces. Do not let the seller rush the drive, and do not test hard braking in traffic.
- Steering: Note vibration, unusual effort, looseness, or a tendency to pull.
- Brakes: On a clear, safe stretch, check for pulling, unusual sounds, excessive pedal travel, or a hard pedal.
- Suspension: Listen for squeaks or clunks over bumps and notice excessive harshness or crashing. The Santro-specific guide associates squeaking and harshness with possible worn suspension bushings; have a mechanic confirm the cause.
- Gearbox: Check that a manual shifts as expected. For an AMT, pay particular attention to take-off and shifts. The guide reports some owner experiences of early clutch wear in AMT cars, which makes it a risk to investigate—not a defect to assume.
- Parking brake: Check that it holds the car as expected on a suitable, safe incline.
Hyundai’s owner manual recommends professional attention for adverse steering, braking, or transmission symptoms. If the test drive raises concerns, do not rely on a seller’s explanation alone.

When to pay for a professional inspection
Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection if you cannot confidently assess body repairs, the underbody, mechanical condition, or diagnostic codes. A general India inspection guide describes services that may include paint-thickness readings, diagnostic scanning, and a written report. It estimates ₹1,500–₹4,000 as of August 2026, but actual fees vary by city, provider, and inspection depth; treat that range as an estimate, not a quote.
A diagnostic scan can reveal stored codes, but it does not certify the whole car. If considering an OBD-II reader yourself, check compatibility with the exact Santro year and variant, and do not use a clean scan as a substitute for a physical and mechanical inspection.

How to compare Santro listings and judge the asking price

Is a Hyundai Promise Santro worth considering?
Hyundai Motor India says each Hyundai Promise car undergoes a 161-point quality inspection. Its page accessed in 2026 displayed eligibility markers of under 100,000 km and under 10 years old, along with program claims covering non-accidental structural-frame criteria, warranty, roadside assistance, services, refurbishment, and documentation support. These are Hyundai’s program terms and claims, not a guarantee that a suitable Santro is available locally or that every concern is eliminated. Confirm current criteria, coverage, and availability in your area, and review the specific vehicle’s inspection and warranty documents.
