There is no evidence-based universal winner. Compare electrochemical and thermochemical recycling on the same plastic feedstock, contamination level, product destination, and system boundaries. Then assess useful product yield and quality, material retention, energy and emissions, costs, residuals, and scale readiness. The available sources describe thermochemical processes, including pyrolysis at pilot and early commercial scale in the United States, while electrochemical plastic conversion remains an emerging research area; they do not provide a direct, matched comparison of the two.

What the two routes mean

The names describe different ways of driving chemical change, not a single standardized process on either side. Each category contains routes with different feedstocks, operating needs, and outputs.

Thermochemical conversion

Thermochemical conversion uses heat-driven processes such as pyrolysis, hydrothermal treatment, or gasification. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes pyrolysis as treatment without oxygen, typically at 400–800°C, that can produce pyrolysis oil, hydrocarbon gases, and char. It commonly targets polyolefins such as polypropylene, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The EPA’s 2026 overview describes U.S. pyrolysis facilities as pilot and early commercial scale; that is a broad maturity description, not evidence that every facility is economically viable.

Electrochemical conversion

Electrochemical conversion uses electrically driven reactions to break down or otherwise change polymeric materials. The 2024 review describes research routes including depolymerization into building blocks, polymer functionalization, and paired electrocatalysis. A reported polyethylene-to-hydrocarbon yield of 7.6% appears in the available text for one cited study. It is a study-specific result, not a representative rate for electrochemical recycling as a whole; the study context is not established here well enough to compare it with a thermochemical yield.

Related processes are not interchangeable labels

The EPA distinguishes conversion from depolymerization, which breaks polymer bonds to form monomers, and purification, which dissolves polymer without breaking those bonds and removes impurities. These are neighboring process categories, so a comparison should identify the actual process and output rather than treating every chemical or solvent-based route as either electrochemical or thermochemical.

Set up a fair comparison first

A route can look better or worse simply because it received cleaner material, used a different product target, or was evaluated within a narrower boundary. Before comparing performance, define a common basis:

  • Feedstock: Name the polymer or mixture, contamination profile, moisture assumptions, and input mass. Include sorting, washing, and pretreatment when they are needed.
  • Product destination: Specify whether the goal is a purified polymer, monomer, chemical feedstock, oil, gas, or fuel. A fuel output is not equivalent to material returned to plastic production.
  • System boundary: Use consistent boundaries for feedstock preparation, conversion, separation, cleanup, and waste treatment. State whether transport and downstream use are included.
  • Scale and operating basis: Distinguish laboratory reaction results from continuous operation and larger-scale performance. Record assumptions about operating time and equipment life where available.

Only after these choices are aligned can yield, energy, cost, or emissions figures answer the same question.

Compare more than the headline yield

Feedstock fit and contamination

Ask which polymers each specific process accepts and what contaminants it can tolerate without undermining output quality or operation. The EPA says thermal and chemical processes can complement mechanical recycling by handling some contaminated, complex, or mechanically unsuitable plastics. That broad statement does not establish equal tolerance across processes, or that dirty mixed plastic can be fed without sorting or pretreatment. Compare the actual incoming material and preparation requirements.

Useful yield and material retention

Separate gross product yield from the amount of input material that ultimately reaches a useful, specification-compliant output. Account for carbon or polymer mass lost in side products, separation, and cleanup, and report co-products as well as the main product. A high mass of oil, gas, or intermediate chemicals does not by itself show how much input became material suitable for new plastic.

NREL lead author Taylor Uekert explained why retention matters: “If you have a process that only has a 75% yield, you’re going to end up needing slightly more electricity, slightly more chemicals, to recycle one kilogram of plastic than you would if you had something like a 90% or higher yield.” This is an explanation of the relationship between yield and resource use, not a measured result for every recycling process.

Product quality and end use

Identify the product and the specification it must meet. A process that makes a feedstock for further refining has a different endpoint from one that produces monomers or polymer ready for reuse. Include the extra processing needed to reach the intended destination; otherwise, a nominal output can overstate practical circularity.

Energy, electricity, and climate impact

Count electricity and heat or steam on the same basis, along with hydrogen or other reagents where relevant. Include direct process emissions and the electricity mix used to generate power. An electrically driven reaction is not automatically low-carbon: its climate result depends on electricity supply, yield, process inputs, and the rest of the system boundary.

Costs and operating requirements

Compare capital and operating costs, feedstock costs, product revenues, and scale assumptions together. Also consider catalyst or electrode life, fouling, corrosion, separations, continuous-operation requirements, and safety. A promising reaction result does not establish commercial readiness or favorable economics.

Residuals and other impacts

Include char, solvents, salts, wastewater, emissions, and any treatment or disposal they require. A process that reduces one kind of waste may create another burden, so compare residuals and their management rather than counting only the saleable product.

What published comparisons can—and cannot—show

NREL’s 2023 closed-loop study offers a useful multi-metric framework: it assessed material quality and retention, circularity, contamination tolerance, minimum selling price, greenhouse-gas emissions, energy, land, toxicity, waste, and water. Electricity, steam, and organic solvents were prominent contributors in its modeled cases. The study evaluated mechanical recycling, dissolution, and several PET depolymerization routes—not electrochemical versus thermochemical recycling—so its results are a framework and adjacent benchmark, not a ranking of the two routes in this article.

Within that study’s selected technologies and assumptions, mechanical recycling and PET glycolysis had economic performance metrics 9%–73% lower than competing modeled technologies and environmental performance metrics 7%–88% lower. Dissolution, enzymatic hydrolysis, and methanolysis had recyclate material-quality metrics 2%–27% higher than the other technologies in the modeled comparison. These ranges describe those modeled comparisons only; they cannot establish which title route is cheaper, cleaner, or produces better material.

NREL’s January 2023 release also reported that U.S. recycling rates during 2019 ranged from 2% for LDPE to 15% for PET bottles and containers. Those figures refer to specific polymers, U.S. geography, and 2019 material scopes; they are not current global rates or process-specific recycling yields. They provide context for the broader challenge, not evidence that one conversion route performs better.

How to read claims that one method is “better”

When a paper or project reports an advantage, check what was actually measured and whether the comparison holds constant the feedstock, product destination, and system boundary. A claim about reaction yield alone does not settle lifecycle emissions, product quality, economics, or scale readiness. Likewise, EPA’s broad description of possible feedstocks should not be read as a guarantee that every process handles every contaminated stream.

The key evidence gap is direct: the sources described here do not establish an equivalent, head-to-head electrochemical-versus-thermochemical assessment on matched feedstocks and boundaries. The defensible conclusion is therefore conditional. Thermochemical pyrolysis has documented pilot and early commercial activity in the United States, while electrochemical conversion is developing in the reviewed literature; the evidence does not establish a broad commercial-scale yield or environmental advantage for electrochemical conversion over thermochemical recycling.
