An owner of an ASRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Taichi OC first noticed discolored pins on the card’s 12V-2×6 power adapter, then later reported that the adapter had burned. The owner said the card-side connector looked undamaged, but that was not an independent inspection. The incident is a warning to take visible connector damage seriously—not proof that RX 9070 XT cards have a widespread defect or that a particular component caused this failure.

What happened to the RX 9070 XT adapter?

In an initial Reddit post, the owner said they noticed discoloration on several pins while swapping a motherboard and asked whether it might be melting or corrosion. The card was an ASRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Taichi OC, using the included adapter that takes three 8-pin inputs and connects to the card’s 16-pin socket.

In a later update, the same account reported that the adapter had melted. The owner said the card-side connector appeared okay and that the adapter had gone through its fourth mating cycle. Those details are the owner’s account, not the findings of a teardown or independent hardware examination.

HotHardware reported the update on August 22, 2025. The coverage discussed possible adapter and PSU factors, but did not establish a cause. Its view that the adapter was likely responsible was the publisher’s assessment, not a confirmed diagnosis.

  • Low-Profile Cable Combs – Each individual cable stays neat and tidy with adjustable cable combs, which clamp around each strand to prevent them from getting twisted and looking messy. The combs can be manually positioned for easy cable management and a clean appearance
  • Three Color Options – Choose from black, white, or white/black cables to either complement your build, or add some contrast for a distinctive look
  • Easy Cable Routing – Simplify cable management with flexible individually sleeved cables and cable combs making it easier to bend and position the cables exactly where they need to be
  • Better Internal Airflow – Efficient cable management means fewer cables blocking airflow, reducing internal temperatures and improving performance

What is known about the cause—and what is not?

The reported damage involved the adapter, and the owner reportedly powered the card with a 700 W Kolink PSU. ASRock currently recommends an 850 W PSU for this exact Taichi OC model. That mismatch is relevant context, but it does not demonstrate that the PSU’s capacity caused the adapter to burn. A wattage recommendation is not a failure threshold, and the available reporting does not include a laboratory analysis or a published finding from ASRock or the PSU manufacturer.

Likewise, the account does not prove that the adapter itself was defective or that the 12V-2×6 connector standard was the root cause. The mechanism remains unresolved in the available reports; no manufacturer inspection result or warranty determination is established there.

  • 【Up to 600W Output】Fasgear 12v-2x6 PSU adapter extension cable supports up to 600W output. The plug terminals of the graphics card cable are made of alloy copper and tinned material, which can bring stable and higher currents. NOTE: This extension cable requires 2 unoccupied 8-pin PCI-e ports on your power supply to properly function. Connecting fewer than two connectors to your power supply may cause system damage. For RTX 5080, 5090 series, it is recommended to use 3x8 pin or 4x8pin for higher stability
  • 【Neat and Tidy】Fasgear 30cm 16pin gpu cable to 2 x 8 pin GPU riser extension cable, compared with the original 10cm power cable, can make your DIY computer system neat and tidy. With 4 transparent cable comb acrylic clips, it is convenient for you to manage this sleeved extension cable cord. Thus, this extension cable can make the appearance of the computer system more beautiful
  • 【16AWG Tinned Copper Wire】Fasgear PCI-e 5.1 extension 12vhpwr cable contains 16AWG tinned copper wire. Compared with the standard 18AWG power cord, this updated 16AWG tinned copper wire can bring stable voltage transmission and higher power output. Meanwhile, this tinned copper can prevent oxidation. As for the 12+4pin connector, 2 of 4 pins are connected with power wires while another 2 pins are GND wires.

Does this mean RX 9070 XT cards are prone to connector failures?

Later coverage described additional user-reported RX 9070 XT connector damage, including reports involving Sapphire cards. Tom’s Hardware’s follow-up adds context beyond the first incident, but it is still a collection of reports rather than a systematic count of cards in use.

The reports provide no reliable denominator or published failure rate. They therefore support saying that more users have reported connector damage—not that the problem affects a known share of RX 9070 XT cards, all Radeon cards, or a particular board partner’s products at a higher rate.

What does ASRock specify for the Taichi OC?

ASRock’s product page lists a single 12V-2×6 power connector, recommends an 850 W PSU, and says the card includes a 16-pin-to-three-8-pin cable. These are specifications for the Taichi OC; check the requirements for the exact RX 9070 XT model you own rather than assuming every partner card has the same recommendation.

The 850 W figure is ASRock’s recommendation for this model, not evidence that every lower-rated PSU will cause a failure or that meeting the recommendation guarantees a connector cannot be damaged.

What should you do if your connector is discolored or damaged?

  • Stop using the connection if you see melting, charring, deformation, or a burnt smell. Do not keep powering the GPU through a visibly damaged adapter or socket.
  • Shut the PC down and disconnect power before inspecting it. Look for discoloration, debris, a loose fit, or heat damage at both the GPU socket and cable plug. Do not force a damaged connector back into place.
  • Contact the GPU maker and PSU maker. Provide the exact card and PSU models, clear photos, and a description of when the damage appeared. Ask them how to proceed with inspection, warranty support, or replacement before reusing the affected parts.
  • Verify the power setup against the card maker’s specification. For the Taichi OC, ASRock’s listed PSU recommendation is 850 W. Also check that the PSU has the required connections and that any replacement cable is approved for the exact PSU model.
  • Seat an undamaged connector fully when a manufacturer has cleared the hardware for use. A partly seated connection is a practical installation concern, but reseating cannot make a burnt or deformed connector safe.

Would a native PSU cable or a different adapter help?

HotHardware advised considering an ATX 3.1 PSU with a native cable, or checking whether the PSU maker offers a compatible cable kit, and ensuring the connection is fully seated. That is practical guidance, not a recall, manufacturer diagnosis, or guarantee against damage. A native cable may reduce reliance on an adapter, but the available reports do not establish that any cable arrangement eliminates risk.

Modular PSU cables are not interchangeable just because their plugs fit. Use only a cable explicitly compatible with the exact PSU model; a cable intended for another PSU can create an electrical hazard. If you are unsure, confirm compatibility with the PSU manufacturer.

ASRock’s CB-12V2X6L600W is a more specific option, not a universal cable: it has connector-temperature monitoring but works only with compatible ASRock Taichi or Phantom Gaming PSUs, according to Tom’s Hardware’s August 25, 2025 report. Owners of other PSU families should not treat it as a compatible replacement.
