Decide what the helper actually needs
First, name the task: for example, reviewing a budget, organizing paperwork, or helping complete an application. Ask which statement period, pages, and details are necessary. Send only that material rather than a full account history when a smaller portion will do.
A statement can reveal account identifiers, balances, and transaction history. The FTC identifies account numbers and financial records as sensitive information in its identity theft guidance. The FTC’s GLBA compliance guide also lists account numbers and balances as examples of nonpublic personal information handled by covered financial institutions. These sources do not establish a universal consumer checklist of fields to hide or retain.
Redact only details the task does not require
Consider masking an account number or removing unrelated transactions if the recipient does not need them. Keep the information required for the task intact—for example, a recipient may need to see a name, date, balance, or particular transaction. Confirm requirements with the helper or the organization receiving the paperwork before editing it.

Redaction is a practical way to share less, not a guarantee that the file is anonymous or acceptable for every application. For paper documents, the FTC advises blocking account numbers with a marker before disposal; that is disposal guidance, not a complete method for preparing a digital statement to share.
Choose a transfer method and check its trade-offs
Use your bank’s own secure sharing feature if it supports the task, or an encrypted file through a transfer channel you and the helper already trust. The sources below explain general security principles; they do not verify or endorse any particular bank feature, cloud service, or product.

CISA explains that encryption can prevent unauthorized people from accessing document contents, while metadata such as an author name or creation time may still be visible. Keep the password or recovery key somewhere safe: losing it can permanently prevent access. If you encrypt the file, send the password through a separate channel, not in the same message as the attachment, and confirm the helper can open it. See CISA’s guidance on protecting stored data.
Do not assume an ordinary email attachment is safe for a sensitive statement. The FTC says in its business-oriented privacy guide: “Regular email is not a secure method for sending sensitive data.” This is a general caution, not a certification or measurement of every email service. If you cannot use a secure sharing option or encrypted file, consider whether the helper can work from a less detailed copy or review the information with you in person. Verify the recipient and protect your bank access
- Confirm who is asking. Use contact details you already know, rather than relying on an unexpected message.
- Check the destination. Verify the email address, portal account, or other recipient destination before transferring the file.
- Watch for suspicious requests. If a message claims to be from your bank and asks you to verify information, contact the bank using a number or channel obtained independently of that message. Do not click an unexpected link or provide account information in response.
- Send the statement, not your credentials. Never give the helper your bank username, password, or one-time verification code. The FTC advises not to share a verification code with someone if you did not contact them first, and recommends two-factor authentication for sensitive accounts such as email and financial accounts. Agree how the helper will handle the statement
Before sending, ask the helper to use the statement only for the requested task, not forward it, and delete or return it when finished. This is sensible handling advice; it is not a specific legal retention duty established by the sources cited here.

The federal materials cited here concern covered financial institutions and particular disclosures. The CFPB’s Regulation P account-number rule addresses disclosures to nonaffiliated third parties for telemarketing, direct mail, or marketing email, subject to exceptions. It is not a blanket ban on a consumer sharing a statement with a trusted helper. An ordinary personal helper is not automatically covered by the GLBA or Regulation P. Requirements may differ by country, bank, and purpose; for legal, tax, lending, or benefits applications, confirm what the recipient requires and check applicable local rules.
