Clean leather and knit or mesh with a mild soapy solution; keep suede cleaning mostly dry. Wipe away residue and air-dry at room temperature. Nike does not recommend machine-washing shoes.
What to use before you start
Gather a soft-bristle shoe-cleaning brush or clean toothbrush, a clean cloth (microfiber works well), and mild soap for uppers that tolerate damp cleaning. For suede, use a suede brush and suede rubber or pencil eraser instead. Avoid bleach and harsh cleaners, particularly on knit and mesh.
Check which materials appear on the shoe, including different panels. If it combines materials, clean each panel with the gentlest suitable method rather than applying one treatment across the entire upper. Nike’s care articles provide material-level advice, not a complete model-by-model cleaning guide; follow any care label supplied with the specific shoe.
How to clean each Nike sneaker material
Leather
- Use a dry brush to remove loose dirt.
- Mix mild dish soap with water, dampen a brush, and work gently over the leather. Avoid hard scrubbing, which can damage the material.
- Wipe away soap with a clean cloth. For stains, Nike also mentions a household cleaning eraser or leather conditioner as possible aids; use products appropriate for the leather finish.
- Leave the shoes to air-dry at room temperature.
Suede
- Keep the first pass dry: brush away debris with a suede brush or toothbrush, moving with the nap.
- For surface marks, gently use a suede rubber or pencil eraser.
- If a stain remains, Nike describes selected spot treatments such as white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or suede cleaner. Use these only on the affected area and choose a product intended for suede.
- If mud or moisture gets on the shoe, let it dry before brushing.
Do not wash suede with soap and water or put it in a washer. Nike warns that water can set stains in suede. Its suede-care instructions are in Nike’s guide to cleaning suede shoes.

Knit, Flyknit, and mesh
- Brush off loose dirt with a soft brush.
- Use mild soapy water and gently brush in the direction of the knit or mesh.
- Wipe away soap with a clean cloth, then air-dry at room temperature.
Avoid bleach and harsh cleaning products, which Nike warns can damage these materials.
Why Nike advises against the washing machine
Nike’s guidance is direct: “Nike does not recommend washing shoes in the washing machine.” Machine washing can damage delicate materials, while dryer heat can deform shoes; bulky sneakers can also risk damaging a washing machine. Hand-cleaning the upper according to its material avoids treating suede, leather, and fabric as though they were interchangeable.

Dry the shoes without heat
After cleaning, wipe away remaining soap or moisture with a clean cloth and let the sneakers air-dry at room temperature. Do not put them in a clothes dryer: excess heat can damage or deform shoes. Nike’s cited care guidance does not specify a fixed drying time, so allow the shoes to dry fully rather than relying on a set number of hours.

Common cleaning mistakes to avoid
- Scrubbing leather hard or using a harsh cleaner on knit or mesh.
- Wetting suede with soap and water or brushing mud before it has dried.
- Using bleach or other harsh products on delicate uppers.
- Putting sneakers in a washing machine or using dryer heat.
- Using the same damp-cleaning approach on every material or panel.
