The video’s title says “exploded,” but the reporting describes battery damage and smoke—not a phone spontaneously exploding during ordinary use. The incident shows what happened to one device under an extreme test; it does not establish how often Pixel 10 Pro Folds fail in everyday conditions.
What happened in the Pixel 10 Pro Fold durability test?
In the October 14, 2025 JerryRigEverything video, host Zack Nelson deliberately bent the phone backward. MacRumors reports that the first bend broke the device; during a subsequent bending action, the battery was damaged and smoke filled the studio. The phone was left charred, and the smoke set off a fire alarm, according to MacRumors’ account of the test.
Nelson’s video description says, “This is the first time in a decade of durability testing smartphones that ive had a phone explode in my hands.” That is his personal account, and “exploded” is also the video’s dramatic title. The available reporting supports describing the event as battery damage followed by smoking; it does not establish a conventional explosion or a spontaneous field incident.
Why did the battery start smoking?
The reported sequence was structural failure during backward bending, followed by further bending that damaged the battery. MacRumors relayed iFixit’s explanation that a short can occur when battery insulating layers are broken. That is a possible mechanism, not a confirmed forensic finding about this particular battery. TechRadar’s coverage likewise describes a snap at an antenna line before the battery smoked.

Does this mean the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is unsafe to use?
This test alone cannot answer that. It documents one phone failing under an intentional, extreme bend; it does not measure a failure rate, quantify the risk of a battery incident in normal use, or provide a controlled comparison with other foldables. The sources cited here do not establish a population-level risk or an official assessment of this specific test. MacRumors and TechRadar both caution that the test’s bending force and direction are unlikely to reflect ordinary use.
If your own phone is visibly bent, badly damaged, unusually hot, or smoking, stop using it and follow Google’s safety guidance rather than trying to bend or open it. Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold safety and regulatory guide says the device is designed to comply with IP68 under IEC 60529 when it leaves the factory, but is not dustproof or waterproof; resistance is not permanent and can be reduced or eliminated by wear, repair, disassembly, or damage. An IP rating is not a guarantee against bending or battery damage.

How does the incident fit Google’s durability claims?
When Google announced the phone on August 20, 2025, it called the Pixel 10 Pro Fold its most durable foldable. Google said the gearless hinge was “twice as durable as Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s,” and that the combined hinge and display design could handle over ten years of folding. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent results from this bend test; the announcement does not provide a test protocol for the “twice as durable” comparison. Google also called it the first foldable with an IP68 dust- and water-resistance rating. See Google’s announcement.
The test does not by itself prove or disprove those claims: it was not a controlled hinge-lifespan test, and the evidence here does not provide matched results across competing phones. Nor does IP68 describe resistance to a deliberate backward bend. Google’s US specifications list an 8-inch inner display, a 6.4-inch cover display, and a typical 5015 mAh battery; those specifications provide product context, not evidence of the likelihood of failure. Google Store specifications showed a US starting price of $1,799 when accessed October 4, 2026; prices can change and vary by market.

What the video can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show: this tested phone broke during a deliberate backward bend, and its battery smoked after further bending.
- It cannot establish: how often Pixel 10 Pro Fold devices fail, the probability of a fire during ordinary use, or whether the phone is more or less durable than another foldable under comparable conditions.
- It is not: a matched multi-device comparison or a published independent laboratory assessment of this specific failure.
