The 2024 ASUS ROG Ally X kept the original Ally’s AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor but added more memory, storage and battery capacity. It weighs 678 g—70 g more than the original—and has revised controls, cooling and ports. Specifications circulated as leaks before ASUS announced the system on June 2, 2024; ASUS’s announcement and RC72LA specification page are the firmer basis for the confirmed details below.

What was leaked, and what did ASUS confirm?

A May 24, 2024 ETA PRIME video was indexed with a title describing leaked Ally X specifications, including a larger battery, a RAM upgrade and USB4. That record establishes that leak coverage circulated before the announcement, but it does not establish who originally supplied the details or whether every pre-release figure was accurate. The indexed video listing should therefore be treated as evidence of pre-announcement reporting, not independent verification of a leak.

ASUS announced the ROG Ally X on June 2, 2024. Its announcement confirmed the broad changes to memory, storage, battery, connectivity, cooling and chassis design. The published configuration is the 2024 RC72LA; it should not be confused with a later ROG Xbox Ally X generation.

ROG Ally X (2024) specifications

Component ROG Ally X (RC72LA) published specification Context
Processor AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme ASUS says it is the same processor used in the original ROG Ally.
Memory 24 GB LPDDR5X-7500; the spec page lists 12 GB × 2 LPDDR5 onboard The original Ally had 16 GB RAM in ASUS’s comparison.
Storage 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD Up from 512 GB on the original Ally; ASUS says the 2280 slot makes larger-drive upgrades easier.
Battery 80 Wh, four-cell lithium-ion ASUS describes this as double the original Ally’s capacity. Watt-hours indicate capacity, not measured play time.
Weight 678 g (1.49 lb) ASUS lists this as 70 g more than the original Ally.
Display 7-inch, 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz IPS-level touchscreen; 500 nits; AMD FreeSync Premium The announcement presents the display as carried over rather than a central upgrade.
Ports and card reader One USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, one USB4 Type-C port with Thunderbolt 4 compliance, UHS-II microSD reader and 3.5 mm audio jack Two USB-C ports replace the original XG Mobile connector arrangement.
Controls and cooling Revised chassis, joystick modules, D-pad, fans and a third exhaust vent ASUS rates the joystick modules for 5 million cycles and claims 24% more airflow.

These are ASUS-published specifications and claims, not independent test results. ASUS notes that specifications can change and availability can vary by market. See the June 2, 2024 announcement and the ROG Ally X specification page for the manufacturer’s published details.

How much heavier is the Ally X?

ASUS lists the Ally X at 678 g, 70 g heavier than the original ROG Ally. That is a modest increase in absolute terms, but it is a real trade-off for a handheld: the system is less light to carry than its predecessor. ASUS says the added weight is centered around the grip and characterizes the balance as comfortable; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independently established ergonomic finding.

What changed—and what stayed the same?

The core processor stayed the same

The Ally X retains the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme. The headline hardware changes are around the processor rather than a replacement for it: ASUS moved from 16 GB to 24 GB of memory, doubled SSD capacity from 512 GB to 1 TB, and doubled battery capacity to 80 Wh. More memory can give the system greater flexibility in how shared system and video memory is allocated, as ASUS notes, but these specifications alone do not establish a particular gaming performance increase.

Battery capacity increased, but runtime is not specified

ASUS describes the 80 Wh battery as twice the original model’s capacity. That is a capacity comparison, not a promise of twice the gaming time: actual runtime depends on workload and settings. The cited manufacturer materials do not establish independent battery-runtime results.

Ports and expansion changed

The original XG Mobile connector was removed in favor of two USB-C ports. ASUS lists one as USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and the other as USB4 Type-C with Thunderbolt 4 compliance. The unit also has a UHS-II microSD reader and a 3.5 mm audio jack. A port specification does not by itself verify compatibility with a particular dock or accessory, so check the accessory maker’s supported-device information before buying.

Controls and cooling were redesigned

ASUS describes updated joystick modules, a revised D-pad, a changed chassis, redesigned fans and an additional exhaust vent. The company claims the cooling arrangement moves 24% more air and that the panel can be up to 6°C cooler to the touch; it also gives the joystick modules a 5-million-cycle lifespan rating. Those figures are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements of temperature, noise, durability or comfort.

Is the Ally X a performance upgrade?

On the evidence available from ASUS’s published specifications, the Ally X is best understood as a capacity, connectivity and design refresh around the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor—not a new processor generation. The extra RAM may help with memory allocation, while the larger battery and SSD address capacity limits. The specification comparison does not establish how much faster games run, how long the battery lasts in real use, or whether the revised cooling is quieter or cooler under a particular workload.

Which details should buyers verify?

  • Region and availability: ASUS cautions that availability can vary by market; current stock and local pricing are not established here.
  • Model identity: Confirm the listing is for the 2024 ROG Ally X, model RC72LA, rather than a later product with a similar name.
  • Accessory compatibility: Check the exact dock, charger or other USB-C accessory against its manufacturer’s compatibility details; the port list alone does not certify an individual product.
  • Real-world claims: Seek independent testing if battery hours, game performance, fan noise, temperatures or hand comfort are decisive for you. The cited ASUS materials provide specifications and manufacturer claims, not those test results.
