Starship reaches orbit through a sequence of handoffs: Super Heavy first accelerates the two-stage vehicle; Starship’s engines ignite before the booster separates in a maneuver called hot staging; then Starship continues accelerating toward orbit and carries out its own mission and return maneuvers. What happens after launch depends on the flight. On Flight 14, Starship reached orbit and deployed 26 satellites, but the mission ended early and the spacecraft tipped over and caught fire after its Pacific splashdown.
What are Starship and Super Heavy?
SpaceX’s integrated launch vehicle has two stages. Super Heavy is the first-stage booster beneath Starship, the upper-stage spacecraft. The Federal Aviation Administration describes both stages as using Raptor engines powered by liquid oxygen and liquid methane. Its regulatory description, last updated July 24, 2025, covers Boca Chica preflight operations such as rehearsals and static-fire testing; it should not be read as a fixed description of every flight’s hardware or recovery plan. FAA: Starship/Super Heavy
How does Starship reach orbit?
1. Super Heavy provides the first major push
At launch, the booster powers the vehicle upward and accelerates it. A launch is not complete just because the rocket has climbed high: to remain in orbit, a spacecraft must build sufficient horizontal speed as well as altitude. SpaceX lists orbital insertion as a distinct objective for Flight 14, after the initial ascent and stage handoff. SpaceX: Starship Flight 14
2. Starship ignites before the stages separate
During hot staging, Starship’s upper-stage engines ignite before the booster engines have fully shut down. The stages separate while the vehicle is still accelerating, rather than waiting for the stack to stop accelerating before separation. NASA explains that this is a more efficient method than traditional stage separation: “With hot staging, the rocket never stops accelerating during separation, so it is a more efficient method than traditional stage separation.” NASA Advanced Supercomputing: Starship Hot Staging

The maneuver creates a challenging plume-flow environment between the stages. NASA Marshall researchers used computational fluid dynamics to study it. NASA’s project account describes meshes involving more than 500 million cells and approximately 40 million CPU hours on the Pleiades supercomputer. Those figures describe the computational study, not Starship’s performance. NASA researcher Brian Richardson said, “Simulating all of Starship including the booster is extremely computationally intensive. Simulations of this size could not be completed in a timely manner without NASA supercomputing resources.” NASA Advanced Supercomputing: Starship Hot Staging
3. Starship continues the ascent and targets orbit
Once the stages part, Starship continues its powered ascent. Reaching orbit requires placing the spacecraft on a suitable path with enough sideways velocity; reaching a particular altitude alone is not enough. The orbital-insertion maneuver is a separate planned step in SpaceX’s Flight 14 objectives. There is no single established time from launch to orbit or universal operating profile in the cited accounts: Flight 3 in 2024 and Flight 14 in 2026 had different objectives and outcomes. What happens to Super Heavy after staging?
The booster’s post-separation job is distinct from Starship’s orbital mission. Depending on the flight, the intended recovery may be a landing at the launch site or on a platform in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the FAA’s regulatory description. SpaceX’s Flight 14 mission page specified a booster landing burn at an offshore Gulf landing point. That mission-specific objective does not mean every flight uses the same recovery profile. What does Starship do in orbit?
Orbital tasks depend on the mission rather than following one universal script. For Flight 14, SpaceX listed an orbital-insertion maneuver and deployment of 26 Starlink V3 satellites among its objectives. The mission plan also called for a deorbit burn followed by controlled reentry, descent and a Pacific splashdown. SpaceX: Starship Flight 14

For historical context, NASA reported that Starship Flight 3, in March 2024, reached its expected orbit, completed its full-duration ascent burn and demonstrated internal cryogenic-propellant transfer. Those were results from that flight; they do not establish what Flight 14 or later vehicles would accomplish. NASA, March 14, 2024
What happened on the latest reported orbital flight?
As of October 4, 2026, Flight 14 is the latest reported orbital milestone in the cited accounts. The Associated Press reported that Starship reached orbit and deployed 26 satellites on its first orbital flight. After an engine shut down prematurely during ascent, flight controllers chose to end the mission early. Starship reentered over the Pacific and splashed down north of Hawaii about three hours after launch; it then tipped over and caught fire. The outcome was therefore an orbital and payload-delivery milestone, not an intact spacecraft recovery or completion of the approximately ten-hour, six-lap plan described in the AP report. How to compare Starship flights
A useful comparison separates mission objectives from what each vehicle actually did. Check whether Starship reached orbit, whether it deployed payload, how Super Heavy was meant to recover, whether Starship performed a deorbit burn, how long the flight was intended to last versus its actual duration, and where each stage ended up and in what condition. A stated objective is not proof that the objective was achieved; for example, SpaceX’s Flight 14 page sets out planned operations while AP reports the shortened flight’s actual outcome.
