Google offers a no-charge battery replacement for some Pixel 7a phones affected by battery swelling, but it is not an automatic replacement for every device. You must check your phone through Google’s programme and it must pass a physical inspection. Google’s programme page was published on 23 April 2025; check its current terms and registration flow for the options available where you live.
What Pixel 7a battery swelling can look like
Google says possible signs include a phone that has become thicker, a bulging or separating back cover, battery drain that is much faster than usual, or a phone that will not charge. Symptoms may develop over time, and some impacted phones may show no obvious symptoms. Google states that “Not all Pixel 7a devices are impacted by unexpected battery swelling.”
If you see a bulging back or suspect the battery is swelling, stop treating the phone as an ordinary battery-life problem. Do not press the cover back into place or try to replace the battery yourself; use Google’s programme process to get the device assessed.
Will Google replace your Pixel 7a battery for free?
Possibly. Google provides one no-charge battery replacement for an eligible, impacted Pixel 7a during the programme’s three-year coverage period, counted from the phone’s original retail purchase date. Google checks eligibility, and the phone must also pass a physical inspection before repair. The programme is not a universal recall or a promise that every swelling report will result in a free replacement.

Google says other damage can affect eligibility. Liquid damage, damage from a sharp object, or damage caused by excessive force may disqualify a phone from a no-charge replacement. Out-of-warranty damage to the screen or cover glass may also incur a fee. Google says it will provide a repair estimate before starting work; you can accept it or have the phone returned.
How to check whether your Pixel 7a is eligible
- Open Google’s Extended repair programme for Pixel 7a page. Review the current terms and start the programme registration or eligibility process.
- Enter the requested device and location details. The registration flow determines whether your phone is impacted and which options are offered for your location. Eligibility cannot be confirmed from symptoms alone.
- Follow the service instructions shown for your phone. If a battery replacement is offered, Google requires a physical inspection before repair. Any estimate for chargeable damage is provided before Google starts the work.
Google’s page says programme coverage is available to people currently resident in Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States (including island territories and Puerto Rico), the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and EEA countries. The precise service route and remedy depend on location, warranty status, eligibility, and availability; use the registration flow rather than assuming that a route offered in one country applies elsewhere.

For some eligible users who do not receive or choose a battery replacement, Google lists other appeasement options. The amounts below are USD-equivalent figures from Google’s programme terms, not guaranteed offers for every country or customer.

| Under warranty | $456 USD-equivalent payment | Not a universal offer; availability depends on Google’s programme rules and location. |
| Previously paid for an authorized battery replacement | A $200 USD-equivalent refund may be available | Applies to qualifying replacements paid for before 30 January 2025; having had a replacement alone does not establish eligibility. |
Google says you cannot change a chosen appeasement option. Check the actual offer shown during registration before selecting one. A battery replacement through the programme does not extend the phone’s standard warranty.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if Google says your phone is not eligible?
A symptom such as a bulging cover does not by itself prove programme eligibility. If the registration process does not offer a no-charge replacement, review the displayed reason and other available options, then contact Google support through the programme page if you need help interpreting the result. Google’s published terms do not provide an independent count of affected phones, so there is no published incidence figure that can predict whether an individual device will qualify.
