Blizzard has announced major Season 5 reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, including a move for Sombra from Damage to Support. The announcement does not provide their complete final kits, so treat those changes as plans until the relevant live patch notes document what is implemented.
What counts as a hero rework?
A rework changes how a hero functions, potentially altering abilities, resources, mobility, counterplay, or the hero’s job in a team. A balance patch can modify an ability or its numbers without replacing that broader role or play pattern. The word “rework” alone does not tell you which mechanics will change: check the dated notes for the specifics.

When comparing versions, look at the patch date and version, role and team function, ability inputs and effects, cooldowns or resource demands, mobility and escape options, and how opponents can respond. Also check whether the change is announced, live, temporary, or still unknown.
Which Overwatch reworks are announced, live, or uncertain?
| Hero or change | Status | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Sombra and Roadhog | Announced for Season 5 | Blizzard announced major reworks for both. Sombra is slated to move from Damage to Support. The announcement reviewed here does not give their complete final ability kits. Blizzard’s BlizzCon announcement |
| Sombra, June 2026 update | Documented live update in June notes | The notes describe changes to Stealth, Translocator, and Hack, intended to restore her flanker identity and improve scouting. These dated adjustments are not the same as the later announced Season 5 rework. Overwatch patch notes archive |
| Lifeweaver, June 2026 update | Documented live update in June notes | Blizzard described his weapons as clunky and adjusted Thorn Volley, Petal Platform, and Tree of Life. This does not establish that a full later rework is scheduled. Overwatch patch notes archive |
| Lifeweaver, early shortlist | Considered at an early stage; later status not established | An early Director’s Take named Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog as an “extremely early shortlist” and said the list was subject to change. That was not a launch commitment. Director’s Take: Small Steps, Big Leaps |
| Community Crafted hero changes | Limited-time Arcade content | The mode featured creator-led hero changes. Event-only versions should not be assumed to be the ordinary live kits. Ride in with Claws Out for Reign of Talon – Season 3: Into the Tiger’s Den |
The early shortlist and the later Season 5 announcement are different kinds of information: the first was explicitly provisional; the later announcement names Sombra and Roadhog for planned reworks. The available announcement does not confirm that Lifeweaver remains planned.

What changes, and what stays the same?
For the Season 5 plans, the established changes are that Sombra and Roadhog are slated for major reworks and Sombra is slated to move to Support. Their complete resulting ability lists, cooldowns, and other mechanics are not specified in the reviewed announcement. Do not infer them from an older patch or from creator-made Arcade changes.
For the June updates, use the June patch notes as the record of those specific changes: Sombra’s Stealth, Translocator, and Hack; Lifeweaver’s Thorn Volley, Petal Platform, and Tree of Life. Those details describe the June update, not a complete account of any later Season 5 rework. For the latest implementation, consult the official patch notes archive.

When do the announced reworks go live?
The announcement identifies Season 5 as the planned timing, but the information reviewed here does not establish a specific launch date or provide full final kits. A plan is not proof that a change is already live. Check Blizzard’s dated patch notes for implementation and the exact version before applying an ability detail to current matches.
Is Sombra becoming a Support?
Yes. Blizzard’s Season 5 announcement says Sombra is moving from Damage to Support. That is a meaningful team-function change, but the announcement does not spell out the finished kit. Until the live notes do, avoid assuming how she will heal, support allies, or perform any particular ability interaction.

How should you adapt to a reworked hero?
- Read the current live notes. Start with the official patch notes archive and identify the patch date and version. Separate implemented changes from announcements and temporary modes.
- Identify the changed interactions. Note which inputs, ability effects, cooldowns or resources, ranges, movement options, and team functions actually changed. Do not carry old assumptions forward where the notes replace them.
- Reassess the hero’s job and matchups. Consider what the documented role and kit mean for team expectations and opponent counterplay. A role move such as Sombra’s announced shift to Support can affect those expectations even before all ability details are known.
- Practice the changed mechanics in a low-stakes mode. Use the live version to learn the new interactions before relying on them in competitive play. If a change appears only in Community Crafted, treat it as Arcade content rather than standard-roster behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
What changes in an Overwatch hero rework?
A rework may change a hero’s abilities, resources, mobility, counterplay, or team function. The exact changes depend on the dated patch notes; the term alone does not specify them.
What stays the same after a rework?
That depends on the implemented patch. Compare the old and new dated notes rather than assuming the role, abilities, or play pattern are unchanged.
