President Donald Trump called for Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan to resign on August 7, 2025, then praised Tan after meeting him at the White House four days later. Trump’s August 11 post called Tan’s success and rise “an amazing story.” The public shift shows a change in tone; it does not establish that the concerns behind the resignation demand were resolved.

What happened between Trump and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan?

Date What happened
August 5–6, 2025 Sen. Tom Cotton dated a letter to Intel board chairman Frank Yeary on August 5; Cotton’s office released it publicly on August 6. The letter raised questions about Tan’s reported investments and company ties, including issues related to his past role at Cadence Design Systems. The Associated Press account and Cotton’s letter document the sequence and the senator’s claims.
August 7 Trump posted that Intel’s CEO was “highly CONFLICTED” and “must resign, immediately,” according to AP. Intel said the company, its board and Tan were committed to U.S. national and economic security. In a separate employee message, Tan said misinformation was circulating about his past roles and asserted that he had always operated within high legal and ethical standards. AP’s report and Tan’s message to employees record those responses.
August 11 Trump met Tan at the White House, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also present, AP reported. Afterward, Trump described the meeting as “a very interesting one” and praised Tan’s career. Intel called the discussion candid and constructive.
August 12 AP reported that Intel shares rose 3.5% that Tuesday. That is a reported next-day move, not evidence that the gain lasted or that the meeting alone caused it. AP’s account gives the figure.
August 22 Intel announced an $8.9 billion U.S. government investment in Intel common stock, funded by $5.7 billion in previously awarded unpaid CHIPS Act grants and $3.2 billion from the Secure Enclave program. This subsequent agreement provides context, but Intel’s announcement does not establish that the August 11 meeting caused it. Intel’s announcement details the terms.

Why did Trump call for Tan to resign?

The demand followed public scrutiny of Tan’s reported investment and company ties in China. Cotton’s August 5 letter asked Intel’s board about reported investments and alleged connections involving semiconductor firms. It also cited Cadence Design Systems’ guilty plea concerning sales of export-controlled technology during Tan’s tenure there, and asked about the board’s awareness, divestment and disclosures.

Those points should be understood as concerns and questions raised by Cotton, not as independent proof of wrongdoing by Tan. The letter is the senator’s account; the cited sources do not establish that Tan committed misconduct, nor do they document the full resolution of the questions raised. AP reported Trump’s demand and its context, but the public statements alone do not explain every consideration behind his position.

Why did Trump praise Tan after demanding his resignation?

The change followed their August 11 White House meeting. In the post-meeting statement AP quoted, Trump wrote: “His success and rise is an amazing story.” He also said Tan and cabinet members would bring him suggestions the following week. Intel described the discussion as a candid and constructive exchange about the company’s commitment to U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership.

That is a marked change in public tone from August 7’s demand that Tan resign immediately. The meeting statements do not say that the earlier concerns were resolved, that Trump withdrew them, or that the parties reached a particular agreement. They establish that Trump met with Tan and spoke favorably about him afterward.

What did Tan say about the allegations?

In his August 7 message to employees, Tan wrote: “There has been a lot of misinformation circulating about my past roles at Walden International and Cadence Design Systems.” He also said that across more than 40 years in the industry he had “always operated within the highest legal and ethical standards.” Those are Tan’s own statements defending his record; they are not an independent finding on the concerns in Cotton’s letter.
