Rocky does not need to read your mind: 2024 coverage says Mark Rober’s googly-eyed robot tracks your hand as you begin forming a move, then quickly displays the gesture that beats it. Its visible 3D-printed hand is part of a fast sensing-and-response demonstration, not evidence that the robot can predict a choice before you make it.
How Rocky detects and counters a move
HotHardware and TechSpot described Rocky as using an infrared motion sensor to track a player’s hand and finger positions, reportedly checking them 100 times per second. That rate is a detail reported in 2024 coverage, not an independently measured benchmark. A mini-computer is reported to interpret the gesture, while servo motors move Rocky’s 3D-printed hand into its response.
The timing is the key. According to those reports, Rocky waits for the player to start forming a gesture and then responds quickly enough to show the winning counter. That can look like prediction, but the described mechanism is rapid motion tracking and actuation—not mind-reading or a general-purpose AI system. TechSpot’s report and HotHardware’s report cover the demonstration.
Can you beat Rocky?
Rober was reported to have offered $10,000 to anyone who could beat Rocky fairly. That was a 2024 challenge; the reports do not establish whether it is still open or specify current rules, eligibility, or prize availability. TechSpot quoted Rober saying, “Now, as for beating Rocky, sadly, regardless of your strategy, your chances are much, much lower. As in 0%.”

The reports’ explanation is that Rocky’s response is built around seeing the player’s developing hand gesture and countering it, so ordinary strategy advice for playing another person does not address the robot’s timing-based response.
What human rock-paper-scissors advice does—and does not—offer
Coverage of Rober’s video mentions a pattern for playing people: after you win, move to the next gesture in the cycle; after you lose, move to the previous one. This is advice attributed to the video, not an independently verified study result, and it is not presented as a way to defeat Rocky’s rapid tracking-and-response mechanism.

Can you build or buy the same robot?
The reports establish that Rocky has a 3D-printed hand, but they do not identify its printer, filament material, hand file, electronics models, or complete bill of materials. The official video page is identified as “My Rock, Paper, Scissors Robot Never Loses (+9 Other Inventions)”; the available information here does not establish that it provides downloadable hand files or build instructions. A reader printing a similar part can look at general 3D printer filament, but no specific material or component is established for Rocky, and the robot’s availability as a product is not confirmed.
