You can secure your PlayStation Network (PSN) account with either a passkey or PlayStation’s two-step verification (2SV). They are separate sign-in approaches: a passkey replaces the password-based sign-in flow, while 2SV adds a code after your password. PlayStation describes passkey authentication as an alternative to 2SV, so do not assume you can enable both as two stacked factors.
Choose the sign-in method that fits your devices and recovery plan
| Consideration | Passkey | Two-step verification (2SV) |
|---|---|---|
| What you use to sign in | A passkey saved on a supported device or synced through a credential manager; PlayStation describes it as a password replacement. | Your sign-in ID and password, followed by a code sent by text message or generated by an authenticator app. |
| What you need access to | The device or passkey-sync method holding the passkey. | The registered phone or authenticator app. You can also use a saved backup code. |
| If your phone or device is unavailable | Another device with the same verification method may let you sign in and register a replacement passkey. Otherwise, contact PlayStation Support. | Use an unused backup code if you have one. Without your phone or codes, contact PlayStation Support. |
| When it may suit you | You have a supported device and a plan for keeping access to the passkey. | You prefer app- or text-based codes, or passkeys are not available to you, and you can store recovery codes safely. |
This compares PlayStation’s documented sign-in and recovery flows; it is not a measured security ranking. PlayStation recommends passkeys in its security best-practices guidance and provides 2SV instructions for people who use that approach.
Set up a PlayStation passkey
From Account Management
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Security and enable Sign in with Passkey.
- Select Create a Passkey and follow the prompts on the device where you want to save or sync the passkey. PlayStation sends an email confirmation after creation.
From a PS5
- On the console, open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
- Scan the displayed QR code with your mobile device and complete passkey creation there.
To add or remove passkeys later, go to Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys.
Check device compatibility
PlayStation lists support on most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later, or Android 9 or later. For browser sign-in, its guide recommends current versions of Safari, Chrome, or Edge. Android users should check Google Play services compatibility; PlayStation says not to use an Android PIN as a passkey. Some hardware security keys may have issues, and PlayStation suggests considering a synced mobile passkey instead. These are platform notes, not a guarantee that every device or credential manager will work.

Set up two-step verification
From Account Management
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management and open Security.
- Select Edit beside 2-step Verification Status.
- Choose Authenticator App or Text Message. Enter your phone number or scan the QR code with your authenticator app. If scanning fails, enter the alphanumeric setup code into the app instead.
- Enter the verification code you receive or generate, then activate 2SV.
- Open Account Management > Security > Backup Codes and record the codes somewhere secure and accessible if your phone is unavailable.
From a console
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
PlayStation says a 2SV code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If it expires, request a new one.
Keep access to your account if you lose a device
If you lose access to the phone used for 2SV
Use an unused backup code to sign in if you saved one. PlayStation provides 10 backup codes, and each can be used once. If you have used most of them, PlayStation says you can get new codes by turning 2SV off and activating it again. If you have neither the phone nor backup codes, contact PlayStation Support for help with 2SV access.

If you lose the device holding your passkey
If another device has the same verification method, use it to sign in and register a new passkey. If no other device is available, contact PlayStation Support. If passkey sign-in fails, PlayStation’s sign-in guidance provides a Can’t Sign In with Passkey route to sign in through email or QR code.
If you cannot use any sign-in or recovery method
Use PlayStation’s account-recovery and Online Assistant route if you cannot access another passkey device, your registered phone, a backup code, or the email for your account. Contact PlayStation Support through its official site if you receive unexpected 2SV messages or notice account changes.

Protect the sign-in process
- Do not share your account details, and sign out after using someone else’s console.
- For passkey setup or sign-in, scan only a QR code displayed in an official PlayStation account or console flow. PlayStation warns against scanning codes sent by other people, including messages offering vouchers, gift cards, in-game items, or other rewards.
- A password manager is optional context, not a PlayStation setup requirement; PlayStation’s general security guidance names password managers as one way to support good security practices.
The setup labels above follow PlayStation Support’s India-region passkey guide and Malaysia-region 2SV guidance. Menu wording and availability may vary by region and change over time; consult your local PlayStation Support page if a label differs.
