Robot vacuum mapping creates a layout of the areas the robot has explored. On models that save maps, room settings let you correct that layout and direct cleaning to selected rooms, while no-go zones and virtual walls tell the robot which areas or boundaries to avoid. The exact features and controls depend on the vacuum model, firmware, and companion app.

What mapping does

A map is the app’s representation of the area a robot has explored. When a compatible vacuum saves that map, the app can use it for later tasks such as selecting rooms or setting boundaries. Without a saved map, those map-based controls may not be available in the same way.

Setup differs by product. Roborock’s S6 instructions ask users to enable Map Saving and review the resulting room layout; Tapo says its robot creates a map before its first cleaning and offers map editing. These are examples for those product families, not universal setup steps. See Roborock’s S6 map-saving instructions and Tapo’s map editing guide.

What room settings do

Correcting room divisions

A robot’s map may not divide the home into rooms as you expect. Room editing lets you adjust those logical divisions—for example, combine or split mapped areas on supported models. This changes how the app organizes the map; it does not physically alter the home.

Targeting cleaning

Once rooms are represented on the saved map, room selection lets you choose one or more areas for a targeted cleaning run instead of asking the robot to clean the whole mapped space. Roborock’s S6 guide calls this Room Mode. Tapo says supported Tapo vacuums support up to 32 rooms; that is a Tapo-specific limit, not a general maximum for robot vacuums. The Roborock and Tapo procedures are documented at Roborock Support and Tapo.

No-go zones and virtual walls

No-go zones

A no-go zone marks an area on the map that the robot should avoid. Depending on the model and app, you may be able to position and resize the zone. TP-Link lists pet bowls, carpet, clutter, and places where a robot has trouble navigating as possible reasons to block off an area. Whether a particular robot supports the feature—and how many zones it allows—varies.

Virtual walls

A virtual wall is a mapped boundary that blocks a passage or section, rather than designating an enclosed area to avoid. It can be useful when you want to keep a robot from crossing a particular line. Not every model offers virtual walls, and some apps may provide different boundary tools.

Example: using these controls on named models

Roborock S6: save a map and select rooms

  1. In the Roborock app, open Vacuum Settings and enable Map Saving.
  2. Inspect the saved map. Use Edit Map to combine or divide rooms if the layout needs correction.
  3. Open Room Mode, tap the room or rooms you want cleaned, and start the run.

Roborock S5: add an avoidance boundary

  1. Edit the map and choose No Go Zone.
  2. Position and resize the zone to cover the area to avoid, then save it.

These labels and steps apply to the cited models; other vacuums may use different menus or lack the feature. Check the manual or in-app help for the exact model.

What to check when comparing models

Do not rely on a generic promise of “smart mapping.” Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the specific model and companion app, and verify which controls are included:

  • Whether it saves maps for later use, and whether it supports multiple floors if you need them.
  • Whether you can edit room boundaries and select individual rooms.
  • Whether it supports no-go zones, virtual walls, or both—and any model-specific limits.
  • For a vacuum-mop combination, whether it offers no-mop zones if you need to protect areas from mopping.

Feature availability and procedures can vary by model, firmware, and app version. The cited manufacturer guides establish examples of these controls, but do not provide a brand ranking or confirm current product availability.
