For most people who want to remap Windows keys without writing scripts, start with Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager. It handles individual keys, shortcut combinations, text sequences, and app-specific shortcuts. Choose SharpKeys instead when you need a simple, persistent one-key-to-another-key remap that remains active without a utility running. If you need broader scripted automation, AutoHotkey remains the baseline rather than a like-for-like remapping alternative.
Which AutoHotkey alternative should you choose?

The important differences are what each tool can remap, whether the mapping is global or app-specific, whether a background utility must stay open, whether you must reboot, and whether the mapping works in contexts such as sign-in, elevated apps, and games.
PowerToys Keyboard Manager: the easiest graphical option
Keyboard Manager is part of Microsoft PowerToys. Its settings let you remap an individual key to another key, a shortcut, or Unicode text. You can also remap shortcut combinations, set a shortcut to apply only to a particular application by using its process name, or map a shortcut to launch an app or open a URI. When it works—and when it does not
- Mappings take effect when saved and remain active only while PowerToys is running in the background.
- Keyboard Manager does not work on login or password screens, including when using Run As Admin.
- A remap may not work in an elevated window unless PowerToys is also elevated.
- Microsoft advises against using it in games: interception can affect performance, and some games’ keyboard APIs may not work with it.
- The
Win+LandCtrl+Alt+Delcombinations are reserved; theFnkey usually cannot be remapped. - Separate mappings for individual physical keyboards are not currently supported.
These limits make PowerToys a strong fit for everyday desktop use, but not a universal remapper for every sign-in, game, or keyboard context. Check the current Microsoft documentation because features and compatibility may change with PowerToys releases.

SharpKeys: persistent remapping for a simple key swap
SharpKeys is a utility for managing Windows’ registry setting for remapping one key to another. The underlying scancode-mapping approach requires an elevated registry change and a Windows reboot; afterward, the remap applies without SharpKeys or another remapping app running. Use this approach when persistence is more important than remapping shortcuts or changing behavior by application. Before applying a mapping, make sure it will not remove or change a key you need to enter your sign-in password. Keep a way to undo the mapping, then restart Windows for the change to take effect.

When AutoHotkey is still the better fit
If your goal goes beyond remapping—such as using scripts to automate workflows—an alternative focused on graphical key mapping may not replace AutoHotkey. How to choose and test a remap
- Decide what you are changing. For one key becoming another key, either option may fit. For shortcut combinations, text, or app-specific shortcuts, choose PowerToys.
- Choose the persistence model. PowerToys requires the utility to run. SharpKeys’ registry mapping requires a reboot but then applies without a background remapper.
- Check the target context. Test the mapping in the application where you need it, especially if it is elevated or a game. Do not assume a mapping works at sign-in or with every keyboard API.
- Preserve a recovery path. Before a registry remap, keep access to the original key or another way to reverse the change, particularly if the affected key is needed for your password.
