No: the “five Starships in two years” line was an uncrewed test-flight target Elon Musk described in September 2024, not a confirmed launch schedule. By October 2026, SpaceX listed Mars cargo flights as no earlier than 2028, Musk had said the company was prioritizing a self-growing Moon city in the near term, and Starship had reached Earth orbit—but had not flown to Mars. The target, current company timing and demonstrated capability are three different things.

What did Musk’s five-Starship plan actually mean?

In September 2024, Musk described sending about five uncrewed Starships at the next Earth–Mars transfer opportunity to test whether the vehicles could land intact. It was an early reliability test, not a crewed expedition or proof that SpaceX had a ready Mars transportation system. The wording was widely reproduced in contemporaneous online discussion, but an authoritative SpaceX transcript of the original statement is not established here; it is best treated as a reported target rather than a verified verbatim quotation.

Earth and Mars align for favorable transfer opportunities about every 26 months, according to SpaceX’s Mars & Beyond page. “In two years” referred to the next such opportunity as framed in 2024—not a rolling promise that five vehicles would depart two years from any later date.

How does that compare with SpaceX’s current Mars timing?

SpaceX’s Starship vehicle page says cargo flights to the Martian surface for research, development and exploratory missions start no earlier than 2028. That is the company’s published timing, not an independently verified operational schedule or confirmation that Mars missions are ready to launch. The page describes Starship and its Super Heavy booster as a fully reusable system intended for destinations including Earth orbit, the Moon and Mars; intended capability should not be confused with demonstrated capability.

Question September 2024 statement Status reported by October 2026
Destination and purpose Mars; test whether uncrewed Starships could land intact. SpaceX lists Mars cargo missions no earlier than 2028; this remains a stated company plan.
Crew Uncrewed test vehicles. The published no-earlier-than-2028 Mars timing concerns cargo flights, not a crewed launch date.
Schedule About five vehicles at the next transfer opportunity, described as two years away from the 2024 statement. No confirmed five-vehicle departure schedule is established by the cited company pages.
Demonstrated milestone A proposed Mars landing-reliability test. Starship reached Earth orbit in September 2026; it did not attempt a Mars transfer or landing.
Near-term program context Mars exploration was the stated destination of the proposed tests. Musk described a near-term Moon-city focus; NASA’s Starship-related work is part of its separate Artemis lunar program.

Why did SpaceX shift near-term attention to the Moon?

On February 9, 2026, TIME reported that Musk said SpaceX had shifted its focus toward building a self-growing city on the Moon, while not abandoning Mars. TIME quoted his explanation from an X post: “It is only possible to travel to Mars when the planets align every 26 months (six month trip time), whereas we can launch to the Moon every 10 days (2 day trip time). This means we can iterate much faster to complete a Moon city than a Mars city.” Those travel intervals are Musk’s stated rationale, not a published guarantee of launch cadence or trip duration for a specific future mission. See TIME’s February 2026 report.

The practical distinction is iteration: lunar missions are closer and, in Musk’s framing, offer more frequent opportunities to test and improve systems. But a Moon-city priority is not a Mars cancellation, and neither is a firm date for a Mars departure. TIME also recounted earlier shifting targets, so older predictions should not be read as binding commitments.

What did Starship prove in its September 2026 flight?

On September 28, 2026, Starship Flight 14 reached Earth orbit for the first time and deployed 26 Starlink satellites, according to the Associated Press. The flight ended early after an engine shut down prematurely. AP reported that the spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific and tipped over; the flight had been intended to last about 10 hours and complete six orbits.

Reaching orbit and deploying satellites are meaningful development milestones. They do not demonstrate an interplanetary transfer, Mars atmospheric entry, intact landing, surface operations or return. AP also described SpaceX’s near-term emphasis on lunar work and satellite launches, rather than a scheduled Mars departure.

How does NASA’s Artemis work relate to Mars?

NASA’s preliminary Artemis III plans describe a crewed test in Earth orbit to exercise rendezvous and docking between Orion and commercial landers, including a SpaceX Starship human-landing-system pathfinder. NASA’s plan is a lunar-program role for Starship, not a Mars mission announcement or evidence that Mars flights are imminent. Details are on NASA’s Artemis III mission-plans page.
