Choose the original Nintendo 3DS if you want optional glasses-free 3D and a folding body; choose the original Nintendo 2DS if you prefer a non-folding design and will play in 2D. Both play Nintendo DS games and Nintendo 3DS titles, but the original 2DS cannot play software exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS family. If you want that newer-model compatibility without 3D, consider the folding New Nintendo 2DS XL instead.

At a glance: original Nintendo 3DS vs. original Nintendo 2DS

Feature Original Nintendo 3DS Original Nintendo 2DS
Display Can show supported games in glasses-free stereoscopic 3D; the depth slider can reduce or turn off the effect. 2D only; 3DS games display in 2D.
Body Folding clamshell design. Non-folding slab design.
Screen sizes 3.53-inch upper screen and 3.02-inch lower screen, per Nintendo’s comparison chart. 3.53-inch upper screen and 3.02-inch lower screen, per Nintendo’s comparison chart.
Nintendo DS games Compatible. Compatible.
Nintendo 3DS games Compatible. Compatible, but displayed in 2D.
New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive games Not compatible, as this is an original model. Not compatible.

Nintendo’s comparison chart lists the original 3DS and 2DS as compatible with Nintendo DS software and Nintendo 3DS titles. The screen dimensions are model specifications from that chart: Nintendo 3DS comparison chart.

What does the 3D feature actually change?

The original Nintendo 3DS uses stereoscopic 3D: it sends different images to the left and right eyes to create an impression of depth without 3D glasses. Its slider lets you adjust the strength or disable the effect, so you can play in 2D whenever you prefer. The effect is optional, not a separate game mode required for the library. See Nintendo’s explanation of how the 3DS 3D feature works.

The original 2DS has no stereoscopic 3D hardware. It runs compatible 3DS games with a 2D display. That makes the choice mainly about whether you want the 3D option and a folding console—not whether you can access a separate 2DS game library.

Can a 2DS play 3DS games?

Yes. The original Nintendo 2DS plays Nintendo 3DS titles, which appear in 2D. It also plays Nintendo DS software. It cannot play games that require the additional capabilities of New Nintendo 3DS models; Nintendo’s Japanese support FAQ specifically distinguishes those New-model-exclusive titles: Nintendo Japan: How Nintendo 2DS differs from other Nintendo 3DS systems.

The same compatibility distinction matters for the original Nintendo 3DS: it plays standard Nintendo 3DS titles, but it is not a New Nintendo 3DS model and does not support New-model-exclusive software. Check a game’s packaging or listing for its system requirements before buying a used console or game.

When the original Nintendo 3DS is the better fit

  • You want the option to try stereoscopic 3D and can turn it off when you do not like it.
  • You prefer a folding clamshell body that closes over the screens when carried.
  • You are buying for standard Nintendo 3DS and DS games rather than New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive titles.

The original 3DS is the more flexible choice for display preference because you can play in 3D or 2D. It is not automatically the better buy: on a used system, screen condition, hinge wear, battery condition, region compatibility, and the seller’s return terms can matter more than the 3D feature.

When the original Nintendo 2DS is the better fit

  • You know you want to play in 2D and do not value stereoscopic 3D.
  • You prefer a non-folding shape.
  • You want access to standard 3DS and DS games without buying a separate 2DS-only library.

Nintendo’s chart identifies the original 2DS as non-folding and mono-speaker, and it lacks the C-stick and ZL/ZR buttons found on later New models. Its simpler shape may suit some buyers, but inspect the unit carefully: because it does not fold, its screens remain exposed during storage and transport.

Should you consider the New Nintendo 2DS XL?

Yes, if you want a larger folding system and New Nintendo 3DS software compatibility but do not need stereoscopic 3D. The New Nintendo 2DS XL is a different model from the original 2DS: it has a 4.88-inch upper screen, a folding body, C-stick, ZL/ZR buttons, NFC, and microSD expansion, and it plays New Nintendo 3DS titles in 2D. Nintendo lists these details on its New Nintendo 2DS XL product page.

For comparison, the original 3DS and 2DS have 3.53-inch upper screens according to Nintendo’s chart. The New Nintendo 2DS XL therefore changes both the size and the feature set; do not assume an advertisement that says only “2DS” refers to this XL New model.

What to check before buying a used system

  1. Confirm the exact model. Look for the model name on the console and listing. Original 2DS, original 3DS, New Nintendo 2DS XL, and New Nintendo 3DS XL differ in screen, controls, and game compatibility.
  2. Match console and game regions. Nintendo says 3DS-family systems are region locked, so verify that the console and game are from compatible regions: Nintendo support on 3DS-family region locking.
  3. Inspect the hardware in person or request clear photos. Check both screens for scratches, discoloration, dead pixels, or image problems; test buttons, slider, speakers, charging, hinges on folding models, and cartridge slot.
  4. Check what’s included and the return policy. Confirm whether the listing includes a compatible charger, stylus, and memory card rather than assuming accessories are present. For example, Nintendo’s New Nintendo 2DS XL product page specifies a stylus and 4GB microSDHC card for that model, but a used listing may omit them.
  5. Verify repair options and total cost. Nintendo’s service-availability page lists several older systems, including original 3DS and original 2DS, as no longer serviced; service status can change, so confirm current availability rather than relying on a repair. Understand the 3DS family’s online-service limits

Nintendo ended new eShop purchases for the 3DS family on March 27, 2023, at 5 p.m. Pacific Time; download-code redemption ended April 3, 2023. Online play and other functionality that used online communication ended April 8, 2024. Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded and software updates can still be received “for the foreseeable future,” without specifying an end date. These limits affect the 3DS family rather than one model over the other. See Nintendo’s eShop discontinuation Q&A.

Which one should you buy?

  • Buy an original Nintendo 3DS if you want optional 3D and a folding design, and the specific used unit is in good condition.
  • Buy an original Nintendo 2DS if 2D is all you need and you prefer its non-folding body, provided its exposed screens and condition work for your use.
  • Look at the New Nintendo 2DS XL if you want a larger folding system with New Nintendo 3DS game compatibility but no 3D.

There is no universal winner. Compare the exact model against the games you plan to play, the form factor you prefer, region compatibility, condition, included accessories, return terms, and the complete used price.
