Yes. You can enable PlayStation two-step verification (2SV) with an authenticator app instead of SMS, so you do not have to provide a phone number for that verification method. PlayStation also supports passkey sign-in. These options do not prove that every account setup, verification, or recovery flow in every country will avoid requesting a number.
Can I use two-step verification on PS5 without SMS?
Yes. PlayStation offers two 2SV delivery options: an authenticator app or a text message. SMS setup requires entering a mobile number; authenticator-app setup uses a code generated by the app instead. See PlayStation’s 2SV setup instructions. Menu wording and support routes may vary by market or software version.
Set up authenticator-app 2SV on PS5
- On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose Authenticator App.
- Scan the displayed QR code with an authenticator app, or enter the alphanumeric code shown on screen.
- Enter the code from the app to confirm setup.
- Save the backup codes displayed during setup somewhere you can access if your phone is unavailable.
This selects an alternative to SMS for 2SV; it is not a guarantee that no other PlayStation account process will ever ask for a phone number. Sony’s setup instructions describe scanning a QR code with an authenticator app but do not establish requirements for every regional account or recovery flow.
How do the three sign-in options differ?
| Method | What PlayStation documents | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| SMS 2SV | PlayStation sends the verification code by text, and setup asks for a mobile number. Source: PlayStation Support. | Use this if you want codes delivered by text; it is the option that links a number for 2SV. |
| Authenticator-app 2SV | PS5 setup supports codes from an authenticator app, and PlayStation provides backup codes. Source: PlayStation Support; backup-code instructions. | Avoids SMS delivery for 2SV, but you should plan how to recover access if the app or device is unavailable. |
| Passkey sign-in | PlayStation supports passkeys as a sign-in method. PS5 setup uses a QR code scanned by a mobile device. Source: PlayStation Support. | This is a separate sign-in method, not the same thing as SMS 2SV. Access to a device with the passkey or another registered method matters for recovery. |
How to set up a PlayStation passkey
- On PS5, go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
- Follow the on-screen steps to create a passkey, including scanning the displayed QR code with a mobile device.
You can also sign in through PlayStation account management, open Security, enable Sign in with Passkey, and create one. PlayStation describes a passkey as a password replacement for sign-in; the setup instructions are at PlayStation Support. A passkey does not establish that all future verification or recovery steps can be completed without another method.

Save backup codes and plan for losing access
PlayStation provides ten 2SV backup codes, and each can be used once. Record them when you enable 2SV and keep them somewhere accessible but secure. If prompted for 2SV while signing in on PS5, enter one backup code instead of the usual verification code. Follow PlayStation’s backup-code guidance.
- You have your backup codes: At the 2SV prompt, use one code to sign in.
- You have neither the codes nor access to the registered phone or number: PlayStation directs you to Support to restore account access.
- You use a passkey registered on another device: PlayStation says you may be able to use that device to sign in and register a new passkey. If you cannot use another device, contact Support. See PlayStation’s account recovery guidance.
Protect the account beyond the sign-in method
PlayStation recommends using a passkey or password manager, avoiding password reuse, and watching out for malicious links. Sony also warns not to scan QR codes sent by other people, including codes attached to offers or rewards. Its guidance is available in PlayStation’s security best practices.
