For a short trip, take the wings straight home and refrigerate them promptly. If the drive will be longer or the weather is hot, keep them cold in an insulated cooler with plenty of ice or frozen gel packs, at or below 40 °F. Keep hot wings at or above 140 °F. Perishable food should not be outside temperature control for more than two hours—or one hour when the air temperature is above 90 °F.
Choose a safe way to transport the wings
Cooked chicken is perishable. The practical choice is to get it home and refrigerated quickly, or to maintain a safe temperature during the trip. USDA FSIS defines the danger zone as 40 °F to 140 °F: keep cold food at or below 40 °F or hot food at or above 140 °F.

For a longer drive, the cold route is usually more practical. USDA FSIS advises that it is difficult to keep food hot without a heat source while traveling and recommends transporting food cold. See USDA guidance on how temperatures affect food and its safe handling guidance for take-out food.
How to get wings home safely
- Reduce the wait before leaving. If you are dining out, ask for leftovers near the end of the visit. For pickup, avoid letting the order sit while you run errands.
- Go directly home. Avoid extra stops and do not leave the wings in a parked car, where temperatures can rise. Keep the package closed and out of direct sun or heat while traveling.
- Use a cooler for a longer or warm-weather trip. Put the wings in an insulated cooler with plenty of ice or frozen gel packs. Keep it shaded when possible. If you have an appliance thermometer, USDA FSIS recommends using one in the cooler to check that food remains at or below 40 °F.
- If carrying them hot, verify the temperature. Hot holding must remain at or above 140 °F. Do not assume an insulated bag or carrier keeps wings at that temperature; without a heat source, maintaining hot temperatures during travel is difficult.
- Refrigerate promptly on arrival. If saving the wings, transfer them to the refrigerator rather than leaving them on the counter while you unpack or eat other food.

How long can chicken wings sit in the car?
USDA FSIS guidance sets a maximum of two hours outside temperature control at ordinary air temperatures, or one hour when the air temperature is above 90 °F. These limits apply to perishable takeout food; they are not extra time to add after a delay at the restaurant. A hot car can become warmer than the surrounding air, so do not treat the standard two-hour limit as a reason to make stops or leave food parked in the vehicle.
If the wings have been outside safe hot or cold holding longer than the applicable limit, discard them. Do not use smell, appearance, or taste to judge whether they are safe: harmful bacteria may not be detectable that way. See USDA FSIS food-safety basics.

What to do with the wings once you get home
Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Divide large portions or whole wings among shallow containers so they cool more quickly. USDA FSIS says most cooked leftovers should be used within three to four days and reheated to 165 °F. Follow its leftovers and food-safety guidance.
