CAMM2 is a standardized alternative to laptop SO-DIMM memory, not evidence that SO-DIMMs have already been displaced. Dell originated the design effort; JEDEC’s CAMM2 standard formalizes a related design for DDR5 and LPDDR5 memory. CAMM2 can offer manufacturers different options for board space and signal routing, but it is not interchangeable with SO-DIMM—and a CAMM2 module still has to match the particular laptop.

What is CAMM2?

CAMM stands for Compression Attached Memory Module. Unlike a conventional SO-DIMM, which inserts an edge connector into a socket, CAMM uses a compression connector against a thin interposer on the motherboard and is secured with screws, according to Kingston’s May 2024 explainer. That is a different physical design, not just a different name for a SO-DIMM.

CAMM2 is the standards-based version developed from the CAMM effort. JEDEC’s JESD318A listing describes electrical and mechanical requirements for both DDR5 CAMM2 and LPDDR5 CAMM2 modules. The listing displayed Version 1.10, dated December 2024. CAMM2 therefore identifies a family of standardized module designs, not one single memory technology.

How Dell’s CAMM design became CAMM2

Dell says its initial CAMM development began in 2019. The company’s technical paper describes the design as a response to constraints it saw in conventional laptop memory layouts. Kingston reports that Dell brought the concept to JEDEC in late 2022 with the aim of creating an industry standard. CAMM2 is derived from that effort, but the Dell design and the standardized CAMM2 should not be assumed to be fully identical.

  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8

Dell’s white paper also says the JEDEC task group involved in standardization discussions included 45 members from 22 other companies. That is a historical figure from Dell’s account, not a current count of JEDEC participants. The standard listing is evidence of a common specification; it does not, by itself, establish how many laptop makers or products have adopted it.

Why use CAMM2 instead of SO-DIMM?

The case for CAMM2 is about system design as well as memory speed. Dell argues that SO-DIMM sockets and the routing needed to connect them take up motherboard area and complicate signal paths. A different module and connection layout can give laptop designers another way to arrange memory on a crowded board.

Dell’s paper also argued that practical SO-DIMM bus speeds were approaching 6,400 MT/s. It described that figure as a practical limit it believed was nearing—not a universal or independently verified ceiling for SO-DIMM today. The paper’s accessible metadata does not establish a publication year, so the claim should be read as Dell’s historical technical position rather than a current market-wide limit.

CAMM2 also allows different memory approaches. Kingston describes designs supporting DDR5 and LPDDR5/X, and says selected configurations can put dual channels on one module. It gives 128 GB on a module as an example of capacity enabled by CAMM2 designs; that does not mean every CAMM2 module or laptop supports that capacity.

For a concrete example of announced product specifications, TEAMGROUP said in a 1 November 2024 announcement that its CAMM2 DDR5 specifications included a 7,200 MHz consumer specification and a 6,400 MHz industrial specification. The company said the consumer figure involved manual overclocking. Those are TEAMGROUP’s announced specifications, not speeds guaranteed by JEDEC for every CAMM2 module or system.

Will CAMM replace SO-DIMM in laptops?

Not on the evidence available here. JEDEC has published a CAMM2 standard, and manufacturers have announced CAMM2 activity. Those facts show that CAMM2 is a real, standardized option—not that it has replaced SO-DIMM across the laptop market. The sources cited here do not establish a market-share, shipment or adoption rate, nor do they establish current broad availability of CAMM2 laptops or modules.

TEAMGROUP’s November 2024 announcement said it expected release in the first quarter of 2025. That was a company expectation at the time, not confirmation of current stock, laptop support or widespread adoption. Availability and pricing cannot be established from that announcement alone.

Can you upgrade a laptop with CAMM2 memory?

Only if the specific laptop is designed to support the particular CAMM2 module. The CAMM2 name alone does not guarantee cross-compatibility: DDR5 and LPDDR5 CAMM2 are distinct variants, and the host platform must support the module type, capacity and configuration. Check the laptop maker’s documentation for the exact model before buying or attempting an upgrade.

  • Confirm the laptop’s documented memory connector and supported CAMM2 variant.
  • Check the maximum supported capacity and configuration for that model.
  • Match the module’s memory technology to the host platform; do not infer compatibility from “CAMM2” alone.
  • Do not buy a SO-DIMM as a substitute for CAMM2, or assume a CAMM2 module fits a SO-DIMM socket.

The cited standard listing provides the scope of CAMM2 requirements, but the full standard text was not accessible here. For a purchase or repair, rely on model-specific laptop documentation rather than inferring pin-level or installation details from the standard’s name.

What to take away from Dell’s CAMM effort

Dell’s original design helped move an alternative laptop memory format into JEDEC standardization. CAMM2 now covers specified DDR5 and LPDDR5 module designs and gives system makers a different physical layout to consider. The meaningful change is that laptop makers have a standardized alternative; whether it becomes common, which systems support it and how readily users can upgrade remain model- and market-dependent.
