That price still applies to the Pro 200 plan, but it is no longer the only Pro option: OpenAI’s Help Center now lists plans at $100, $200, and $500 per month. The right choice depends on how often you reach usage limits and whether you need a feature reserved for the top tier.
What OpenAI announced in 2024
OpenAI’s December 5, 2024 announcement introduced ChatGPT Pro as a $200 monthly plan aimed at people doing demanding AI work frequently. The launch offer included access to o1, o1-mini, GPT-4o, Advanced Voice, and o1 pro mode. Treat that list as a description of the 2024 launch, not a complete specification of today’s plans.

OpenAI described o1 pro mode as using more compute to produce more reliable answers on difficult problems, with longer response times. The launch post reported results on selected evaluations, but the figures available here do not provide readable benchmark scores. Its “4 out of 4” figure is the criterion used to count a solved question in a stricter reliability evaluation—not a claim that ChatGPT answers every question correctly. These are OpenAI’s own reported results, not an independent assessment.
The announcement also said OpenAI would award ten Pro grants to medical researchers at leading U.S. institutions. That was a launch-era grant announcement, not a recurring plan benefit.

What ChatGPT Pro costs now
As of October 4, 2026, OpenAI’s Help Center article about Pro tiers lists three monthly plans. Pro 200 is available again for new subscriptions at $200 per month, though new subscribers who do not meet the grandfathering criteria receive a lower included usage allowance than the previous offer.

The Help Center establishes the relative usage order and Ultrafast availability, but it directs readers to OpenAI’s pricing page for a full feature comparison. The table therefore does not assume that every model or feature has identical limits or availability across plans. Check the pricing page before subscribing, since plan details can change.

Is the $200 plan worth it?
Pro 200 is most relevant if you use ChatGPT frequently enough that a lower tier’s included usage is a recurring obstacle, and the added allowance is worth $100 more per month to you. Pro 500 is a separate decision: it costs $300 more per month than Pro 200 and is the only Pro option documented here with Ultrafast, as well as the highest included usage.
Before upgrading, consider how often you actually hit limits, which models or features you rely on, and whether a limit interrupts work that matters to you. If your current use fits within a lower tier’s allowance, the higher recurring price may not deliver a practical benefit. OpenAI’s plan information does not establish a typical amount of time or money saved, so there is no evidence-based basis for promising that Pro will pay for itself.

Is ChatGPT Pro unlimited?
Do not read the 2024 launch announcement’s use of “unlimited” as a promise that every current model and feature has no limit. OpenAI’s current tier documentation says allowances vary by plan and model. When a model’s allowance is reached, that model may be unavailable until its allowance resets; the reset time is displayed when available.
Eligible feature credits are applied only after included usage is used, and credits do not add usage to every model or feature. Buying credits therefore does not guarantee unrestricted access to ChatGPT.

How to subscribe, change plans, or cancel
- To subscribe, sign in to ChatGPT and select a plan through OpenAI’s pricing page. Pro is billed monthly; annual billing and prepayment for multiple months are not available, according to the Help Center.
- To view or change your plan, open Settings > My Plan.
- To cancel, use the platform where you purchased the subscription. Cancellation normally prevents the next renewal while access continues through the current billing period. Uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription.
Who can use the earlier Pro 200 allowance?
OpenAI’s Help Center describes a temporary grandfathering window for customers who had an active Pro 200 subscription during September 22–29, 2026. Eligible customers can keep the previous allowance through October 29, 2026, provided the subscription remains active. New subscriptions outside those eligibility criteria use the updated allowance. Because these dates and conditions are time-sensitive, confirm the current terms in the Help Center before relying on them.
