To choose lower-sodium deli meat, compare the sodium milligrams on the Nutrition Facts labels of similar products, using the same serving basis—and check whether that serving matches the amount you plan to eat. A “reduced sodium” label describes a comparison with a regular product; it does not guarantee that the meat is low in sodium.
How do I choose lower-sodium deli meat?
- Compare similar products. Check the sodium amount in milligrams per serving for the turkey, ham, roast beef, or other deli meats you are considering. Sodium can vary substantially among similar foods and brands, so the meat’s name alone is not a reliable guide. The FDA’s sodium guidance recommends using the Nutrition Facts label to compare options.
- Check the serving size. See how many slices or how much weight counts as one serving. If your sandwich uses more than that amount, account for the additional sodium rather than comparing products as if you were eating only one labeled serving.
- Use % Daily Value for a quick check, then compare milligrams. FDA’s general guide considers 5% Daily Value (DV) or less per serving low and 20% DV or more high. The sodium DV is less than 2,300 mg per day. These are general label-reading reference points, not deli-meat-specific limits.
- Look beyond the front of the package. Treat claims such as “reduced sodium” as a reason to check the Nutrition Facts panel, not as a substitute for it. Compare the listed amount and serving size with other candidates.
There is no single deli-meat type or brand established here as the lowest in sodium. Formulations can change, so use the current package label to make the comparison.
What deli meat has the least sodium?
There is no dependable answer based only on whether the meat is turkey, ham, or roast beef. Sodium varies among products within those categories. To find the lower-sodium choice available to you, compare the milligrams per serving on the current labels of similar products, and make sure their serving sizes are comparable.
Is reduced-sodium deli meat actually low in sodium?
Not necessarily. In the FDA consumer guide, “reduced sodium” means at least 25% less sodium than the regular or reference product. It is a relative claim: the product may still contain a substantial amount per serving. Federal regulations also address relative claims, including the need for an appropriate reference food and identification of the reference and difference (21 CFR § 101.61).

Other package terms also have specific meanings in FDA’s consumer guide:
| Package wording | Meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Low sodium | 140 mg or less per serving | Confirm the serving size and the sodium amount on the label. |
| Reduced sodium / less sodium | At least 25% less sodium than the regular product | Compare the absolute milligrams per serving; the product is not necessarily low. |
| Light in sodium / lightly salted | At least 50% less sodium than the regular product | Check the Nutrition Facts panel; this remains a relative comparison. |
| No salt added / unsalted | Salt was not added during processing | Sodium may still be present. |
| Sodium-free | Less than 5 mg per serving | Verify the claim and serving basis on the package. |
For plain-language help with package claims, the American Heart Association’s guide to food packaging claims also advises readers to check Nutrition Facts labels.

Does “no salt added” mean sodium-free?
No. “No salt added” means salt was not added during processing; it does not mean that the product contains no sodium. Check the Nutrition Facts panel for the amount per serving. FDA’s consumer guide defines “sodium-free” as less than 5 mg per serving, a separate claim.
How much sodium is in a serving of deli turkey?
There is no single figure for deli turkey: the amount depends on the product and the serving size stated on its label. Read the sodium milligrams per serving on the package you are buying, then compare it with other turkey products using comparable serving sizes. If you use more than one serving in a sandwich, account for the larger portion.

What else should I consider when building a sandwich?
Deli meat is only one part of the meal. Bread, cheese, condiments, and other fillings also contribute sodium, so consider their labels and portions when comparing sandwiches. The FDA includes deli-meat sandwiches among common sodium sources and encourages comparing foods and portions.
Sodium also serves functions in meat processing, including curing, moisture retention, flavor, and preservation. When it suits your meal, the FDA advises choosing fresh meat, poultry, or seafood rather than processed varieties. That general substitution is not a guarantee that a particular prepared alternative contains less sodium; compare its label or recipe.
