When a marketplace marks an x402 resource as unpayable, first determine which stage failed: listing eligibility, payment-option compatibility, payload creation, verification, or settlement. A 402 response is only the start of the payment flow; a well-formed challenge does not prove that a particular marketplace can pay it.
Identify what “unpayable” means in this case
Marketplace labels can describe different failures. Establish whether the listing is missing or rejected in a catalog, the marketplace client cannot construct a payment, a facilitator rejects a submitted payment during verification, or settlement fails after verification. Those outcomes point to different owners and fixes. The protocol flow separates requirements, client payment, verification, and settlement; the x402 v2 specification describes the stages and their errors.
Capture the response before changing configuration
Record the marketplace and listing ID, resource URL, UTC timestamp, exact status code, response headers, and response body. Save the complete PAYMENT-REQUIRED and PAYMENT-RESPONSE values if present, along with the payment-bearing request’s PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header in a controlled environment. These headers carry requirements, the client’s payment, and settlement information respectively. Redact secrets and do not publish signed payloads or wallet-sensitive data.
Check whether the advertised payment option is compatible
Decode the Base64 JSON in PAYMENT-REQUIRED. Inspect x402Version and each entry in accepts; do not assume a marketplace chooses the first option or supports every option you advertise. For the option it attempts to use, compare the version, scheme, network, asset, amount, recipient (payTo), timeout, and any scheme-specific extra fields with your intended deployment.

The v2 specification distinguishes malformed requirements from unsupported network or scheme combinations, and also defines errors for amount, signature, and recipient mismatches. Use the exact error rather than treating all incompatibility as a generic 402 problem.
Confirm the actual facilitator’s support
Find which facilitator—managed, self-hosted, or in-process—handles this resource, then check support for the precise version/scheme/network tuple. The Solana facilitator guide directs integrators to check /supported and not advertise a combination unless it is supported. A different marketplace or facilitator may expose different behavior, so do not infer support from another integration.

Separate payment formation from verification
If the marketplace never makes a payment-bearing retry, focus first on discovery, listing eligibility, or client compatibility: your route may not have received a payment attempt at all. If it does send one, inspect the payload in a secure test environment and compare the signed terms with the option selected from accepts.
Check the facilitator’s /verify result and its invalidReason or invalidMessage, or the equivalent fields in that implementation. An unsupported network, invalid signature, amount mismatch, or recipient mismatch calls for a targeted correction. In the x402 flow, verification occurs before fulfillment and settlement; verification success alone does not establish that funds settled.

Check settlement carefully before retrying
Inspect the /settle outcome, errorReason, transaction hash, and network. A settlement_pending result is unresolved, not a definite failure: a transaction may have been broadcast even though confirmation could not be established. Preserve the hash and reconcile it on the corresponding chain before deciding whether another attempt is safe.
PayAI documents polling a pending outcome and identical-request-body retries as idempotent for its settle endpoint; that guarantee should not be assumed for other facilitators. A network error or malformed facilitator response likewise proves neither that funds moved nor that they did not. The Solana facilitator guide explicitly cautions that these conditions are not proof of payment.

Test marketplace-specific checks as hypotheses
Marketplace eligibility and catalog systems can impose product-specific checks beyond the protocol. The following reports justify controlled tests only when they match the marketplace and payment setup; they do not establish universal x402 rules.
Description length in Bazaar-related cases
An x402 Foundation issue opened July 30, 2026 reports four Bazaar endpoint cases where shortening resource.description coincided with successful settlement. The issue author cautions that this does not establish a universal 500-character limit. If the affected marketplace is Bazaar or a related integration, try a shorter description as a reversible test, keeping the challenge otherwise identical and comparing the results. Do not rely on a fixed threshold without authoritative documentation or reproducible confirmation.

EIP-712 token domain metadata
A seller report dated October 3, 2026 says an Agent402 eligibility check rejected a route advertising EIP-712 extra.name as USDC, while the Base USDC contract’s domain name was reported as USD Coin; the seller says correcting the string fixed that incident. This is a single report, not evidence that all marketplaces check the same fields. For an EIP-712 route, compare the contract’s actual name and version on the relevant chain with the authorization domain and advertised metadata.
Keep gateway behavior in scope
Cloudflare’s x402 documentation describes its own version 2 gateway flow and client-facing headers. Use it to understand that integrations may be product-specific, not as evidence that an unrelated marketplace uses Cloudflare’s headers or behavior.
Send a focused escalation packet
Once you know which stage is failing, send the marketplace or facilitator operator enough detail to reproduce it without exposing sensitive material:
